Myth: the myth goes that a couple of buddies went on a camping trip on a beach. They had a huge fire going using coals, that you would use for your grill, and medium sized sections of wood. The one guy got a soda out of the cooler and tossed it into the fire. They all ran a short distance and then waited to see what would happen. As the soda evaporated the pressure was so intense that it exploded making the coals and wood sections fly past them and landed maybe a foot or two from where they were.

I call B-S on that one. The liquid would heat up and expand - but it would pop the top out long before it heated up enough to burst the sidewall. Same effect you get from putting a can in a freezer. It sprays coke everywhere, and the pop top is found poking out.
Thanks for replying Theosus but I'm not certain with your fact on the matter.Heating a soda up is just like when you shake it up.There is a pressure from the gases in the soda that builds inside the can. When there is too much pressure in the can the soda flashes into steam and has no where else to go but out in all directions. Therefore it causes an explosion.
Really...? When you shake a soda it explodes? The soda doesn't flash into steam firstly. The pressure does build, and the can does rupture allowing the soda to escape, but it most certainly doesn't explode. Some ignorant people might view this rupture as an explosion, but it doesn't provide anywhere near the force to throw charcoals and wood anywhere.
Water under pressure boils at a higher temp. than water at normal pressure, so yes it could flash into steam if it were heated above the boiling point under pressure, and pressure was suddenly released. Now the amount of water that actually does, I don't know.
even though the pressure is unifor the pop top is the point of failure as it is the part that will move out of the way the easiest. so when it does all the air will rocket the can a few feet but it wont explode since all the gas can go out of the top.
The bottom of soda cans are also designed to allow for some expansion before bursting. Ever see one in the store that just wouldn't sit flat cause the bottom was popped out.
i no what you mean about trigger words use an under score to mess it up ie K_ill
as for a pop top less can see the episode about soda and mentos they try other cool things and once is putting a can of i think beans on the stove and let it sit untill it blew out. really cool but no real shrapnel just a can and its lid.
glass would pop top i tried it once i took a glass bottle of juice and put is on a propane flame and the metal cap blew off, not very far because only one side opened and then the other was pulled of by the force of the juice flowing out. if you want to make an explosive there are better ways.
they make aluminum bottles of soda? didn't know that. I thought they just made aluminum cans of soda. That and if it really was an aluminum bottle there would be a seam where the two ends of the aluminum meet. That seam would give out way before the bottle exploded. So you would have some spray off from the weakest point of the seam.
