There is no myth here. Katanass and other swords have been known to cut peoples heads off in one stroke. One of the early posts mentioned the Mythbusters show with the lawn mower blade. Well a lawnmower blade is not a katana. A katana is a very sharp, highly polished blade. The importance of being sharp is obvious but many people forget abtout the polished sides. A blade with rough sides will not cut nearly as well as friction will occur. The rape of Nanking link does work that was mentioned above also. Again there is nothing magical about katanas or samurai. Just a very well built sword with (hopefully) an adept user and cutting someone's head off can be done. As part of their training they do make analogs of human bodies. I suppose if the Mythbusters wanted to they could make their own also. Then they could find an accomplished martial artist and"prove" that it can be done.

In feudal Japan swords were tested on criminals. The top rating was a 5 body blade indicating that it successfully cut through 5 bodies. Also a katana can slice completely through a body from entering at an oblique angle at the shoulder and exiting just above the hip.
