I heard a story of a woman who was bitten by a rat while sitting on a toilet. If you do a google search, it seems to have happened. Can a rat crawl up a sewer pipe, through the trap in the toilet and make it to the bowl? Or was the rat already in the toilet when the unfortunate user sat down? You just have to see this video!! It is not all that common but it happens. I personally killed one that had come up through a toilet. I have no idea how they do it.
An interesting story from North Dakota where it's not uncommon to call an off duty police officer from home to deal with a problem. It seams the officer was asleep at home when he was called to investigate an unknown problem at a bar. When he got to the bar he found that the "problem" was a rat in a toilet. Apparently displeased with being called from home on such a matter, he drew his .357 mag. revolver and blasted the rat to kingdom come. He then reholstered his gun, got back in his car and drove off.

Hi this is NO Myth, we had a rat visit us in Moncton New Brunswick Canada in our toilet Nov 30th, 2008. My common-law heard a noise and thought maybe it was our dog, but the noise was coming from the bathroom. Sure enough there's "Ratatouille" swimming in our toilet bowl.I flushed the toilet several times. A plumber told me to fill the tube with hot water than release, this will discourage them from entering the pipe again. Oh we did pour a gallon of bleach too.Keep the seat down, always. Maybe even flush before opening the cover for awhile.

None of that will keep the rats away in the long run, and could damage your plumbing. But then again, it really doesn’t matter. A rat swimming/climbing up the plumbing into a toilet is such a fluke occurrence it’s just not likely to ever happen to you again.
As for how you dealt with that particular rat… as a rat lover, I can’t really say I appreciate your choice… but on the other hand, rats are panicky little escape artists, so you probably would not have had much fun trying to grab or bag him to toss him out.…
