i think that the speaker faile because it should have been mad to travel ony up and down. with the rig you had. the speaker could tilt at thr center at odd angels and caused it to go up and down uneven.the bottom of the speaker center should have been mounted inside a tube or something that would force it to only go up and down straight. and maybe even shorten the travel.

If you look at the video, it's pretty obvious why it failed. As the sunroof opened, the cone pushed air out of the car and the sunroof slammed shut when the cone reversed direction.

This created a pump that eventually ripped the rubber rim of the "speaker" cone as it pulled a vacuum inside the car. The weakest point gave in.

I thought the episope was great, but if you saw the episode the sunroof was the problem. They should not of bought the Mercedes. Maybe a beater car.

All the more fun it'll be when the myth gets revisited.

This one definitely deserves a re-do! What ever happened to recreating the myth just to see what conditions were actually needed? For example, when they exploded the Hungarian tree cannon or the solidified cement truck. I had some observations as to why this subwoofer failed. The crankshaft looked like it was hitting the metal crossbrace when it was at the bottom of the downstroke. Were the edges of the plywood mounting plate rounded off to prevent tearing of the inner tube? Double or triple it to prevent tearing. Finally, WELD the sunroof and doors closed!

They did not focus on the actual viberation from the sound waves of the Bass. They only focused on air pressure. They need a actual speaker that is very big that can really pump out the bass. Once they do this, they can then bust or confrim the myth. They did it all wrong.. All they did was have this gaint speaker up and down..That's no going to do as much as the acutal bass would do with air pressure added in as well.

this episode needs to be revisited. I'm part of the Db racing group and i have installed 6 subwoofers (Orion 3500) with a 7000.1 to each sub in a montero 98 and in turning on the car i failed to notice the volume was all the way up and in one chirp blew out all the windows. In the actuall races i have seen windows shatter and if you remeber correctly the guy from DB racing said he has also seen windows blow out, panels break, side view mirros fall and even bolts fall of the car. If they want a real test they should consiter the HAMMER sub it weight is 300 pounds. It is the most powerfull sub in the WORLD. Just put four of those in one car and see what happens.

Why didn't they just weld The sunroof shut in the first place????? Confused It makes the most sense if they want to destroy the car

What is the purpose of these loud systems. I like loud music...but all the overkill...why? Just curious

I also feel this myth needs to be revisted and this time use real speakers not goofy pumps that look like a speaker i have seen cars shatter windows and if you go to a real comp, some of the vans look like armored tanks, this is to keep the spl in and also the cars would fall apart if they weren't over built. just search t3 audio on youtub they shattered there windshield an there are much bigger systems with much more power that could be built.

All these entries talk about shattering windows. It was clear from this experiment that as soon as a window or sunroof shatters, the damage ends.

If a subwoofer really can destroy a car (not just rip some pieces off) it has to do so after some windows have gone, and that is something nobody has seen. Destroying the chassis after a window has gone, or at least making a door come off, would satisfy the myth, but that is not going to happen in a reasonably good car.

The Mythbusters needed to make the gigantic woofer out of aluminum or for that case anything stronger than cardboard. I believe aluminum or even plexiglass would have done better. Also they should have made the car air-tight.

I agree that deisel RPMs arent sufficient to power a large subwoofer like the Mythbusters.
