Even though I've bought her several types of jar openers, my mom always holds jars (pickle jars, jam, etc.) at an angle and slaps the bottom before she tries to open it. She swears it makes it easier to open. They're vacuum sealed, and I don't see how slapping it is going to help.

I do slap the bottom of jars before opening them, but I think you are right that the advent of vacum sealing has made this no longer work.

I usually have the jar under the tap for a while and turn on the hotwater..

That often helps.
