The old "Bug" was actually pretty watertight.

Back when I bought my first new one, in 1968, they would sign you up for the VW magazine, Small World.
In one issue, they had an article on a contest they held every year in Italy.
Folks would drive their VWs into the Mediterranean and whoever had the longest "floater" would win.
