I keep hearing that you have to leave the oven door open when it is set on broil, or the over could explode. I suppose that it is possible that the element just gets too hot, but I have never followed this rule unless there was someone else in the room enforcing it. And never had a problem.

Obviously, I meant, "or the OVEN could explode".

It won't explode. If you run an oven on broil with the door closed, it will reach a temperature that satisfies the set point, and turn the gas off to the burner like any other temperature you choose. Leaving the door open allows it to broil the food as intended by not allowing that to happen.

Why didn't you just edit your message instead of posting a 2nd message?

Well dog gone it you just answered one of the mysteries of life for me. Seriously I never knew why they said to leave the door open when broiling. Your answer makes sense.

Yup. That's also why your oven door has that stop built into it that holds it open just a few inches. This keeps it cool enough to keep the element on, without obstructing the rest of the kitchen with the wide-open door. It also keeps from blasting the kitchen with too much heat.

For the same reason I missed the error when I proofread before posting. A little too much no sleep. I realized my error as I hit the post now button, but decided to correct the no sleep rather than the post. Cinn
