what causes the mysterious "pee shivers"? you know, the kind of full body shiver that runs all the way down your spine during urination. I've asked a bunch of friends and most of the males have experienced it, none of the females though. No website that i've found has come up with a definate explanation for this phenomenon. Please help me out, its driving me crazy.

I have heard a couple different explanations for this.

1. It is due to the fact that urine is of course warm and all of that warmth leaving your body causes the shiver, much in the same way being outside in the cold does. I'm not buying that one because everything else in your body is still the same temp.

2. It is a mini orgasm. Now bare with me on this one. Many men wake up most mornings with an erection, this is believed to be caused (I believe a study was done) by a full bladder pressing against the prostate. Stimulating the prostate of course causes a man to ejaculate. So it is not too far fetched to think that the bladder releasing pressure from the prostate causes the "Pee shivers"

Any other causes would be interesting to hear.

If it's a male-only thing, why did my 1 year old daughter visibly shiver when she urinated?

I used to have the pee shivers when I was a kid, but they went away around puberty.

George Carlin talked about the pee shiver in one of his routines.

Wow, this is something I have experienced and never thought to ask anyone about. Cool

I just told my wife about it, she is a RN, and she is aware of surgery patients shivering prior to surgery. She said it's because they often have large areas of skin exposed to the air. My thought now is it's because of the large surface area of skin I expose as I prepare to pee. Razz (she, sadly, disagreed)
