http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptex
" It is claimed in the novel that the original design came from the secret diaries of Leonardo da Vinci. In reality, though there is little doubt he possessed the mechanical skill to design such a device, there is no record of him actually doing so."

I believe the noble collection made one that came with certain copies of the movie
as for no proof of Da Vinci ever making an extremly fragile device that is quite small and easily destroyed or lost. why draw plans for something within your means and then never try to make it?

Da Vinci never drew plans for the cryptex. That was a fabrication by Dan Brown.
However, da Vinci drew plans for many things he never tried to build.

I must have read your last post to quickly then. My point is it would be difficult for a single man to build a flying machine or a tank in Da vinci's time but something small like a cryptex would be much more manageable. I have not read Da Vinci's journals so I do not know everything he may or may not have designed.

Just because I'm feeling pedantic today, it's Cryptex, with a "y".
And the book and the movie were both so-so, with Dan Brown's usual penchant for the "Deus ex machina" miracle salvation for the hero. Read a couple more of his books and that will rapidly become tiresome.

I do not recall ever hearing of Da Vinci making a cryptex, but I have little doubt he could have. They can be very simple or quite complex. Since the book came out there have been plenty of places selling them.
