The story goes that billiard balls had been made of ivory for a very long time. However, elephants were now being slaughtered at an alarming rate for their ivory, and the search was on for a material that would be a reasonable alternative. In 1869 a material called nitrocellulose was tested, and urban legends say that this ball actually exploded during rough play.Did it?
