a simple myth. it would be great to find out if a titanium ring could save ones hand if extreme amount of weight happened to fall flat across the hand. would the ring save it from being crushed or simply just buckle under the weight?

Well now that would depend, wouldn't it? How much weight? What size and style ring? Is it pure titanium or an alloy?

Titanium doesn't have magical powers. It has roughly the same properties as steel when it comes to hardness, toughness, tensile strength and so forth.

Where it departs from steel is in strength per unit weight; titanium parts can be made the same size as steel parts, have the same strength but weigh several times less.

Now, I can crush steel pipe in my bench vise, and the walls are thicker than any ring you're likely to wear. I don't have any titanium pipe, and if I did I wouldn't be wasting it, but I'm guessing it would crush just as easily. If you're planning on this as some sort of safety device, you might want to work on Plan B.

actually i have seen this fact that rings can save of fingers but it was gold ring. my grandfather reached over a table saw and lost his thumb but his ring saved the all the others from bring cut off; and had to have surgery to fix tendons and ligament. And the ring was still intact until it was cut off at the hospital. it was a 24k gold ring

I remember seeing something of this nature in the movie "Abyss" where the main character was wearing a steel (I think) wedding ring that saved his hand from being crushed by a hydraulic door. I always wondered how much a steel ring could take before failing. The door was obviously too powerful for a lone man to force open based on the premise.

Well depends on a lot of stuff. My friend who is a corpseman for the navy has seen people loose fingers cause of their rings. Something electrical catches the ring. Sometimes the ring wasnt straight to the falling object and the ring kind of twist and the finger is either smashed more or if the object has fallen far enough to pick up some speed it cuts the finger off. He has that a guy had something fall on his finger and the tip broke off and the ring smashed cutting the circulation off to the finger. Which helped him a lot. Didnt save his life since medical was right there and he wasnt in no danger of bleeding to death. Even steel toe boots have a crushing story. If you have something to heavy crush your boots it will send those steel plates down to chop your toes off.

I live on a farm and last summer I was working on a tractor. a hydrolic cylinder that I had removed from the front end loader fell on my hand. It landed on my wedding ring. the cylinder weighed about 20 - 30 Lbs. anyways my hand was okay ... but my ring (stainless steel) got squashed, and squeezed my finger. I had to hammer it back into a ring shape so i could take it off. so rings can save fingers, just depends on the weight of the object and if it's a direct hit.
