The myth is that the material used to make billiard balls is strong enough not only to withstand the impact of a bullet fired from a handgun but also destroy the bullet itself. If this IS possible then perhaps one could play billiards by shooting the billiard balls rather than hitting them with a pool cue.

ive seen this on tv somewhere on a show. i cant remember where, but it was legitimate.. but the bullet they used was a low caliber, and it was shattered from the impact from the ball... as far as what they are made of, its some sort of polymer all the way thru..
