Can safety glasses really stop a 22. bullet?

Depends on how thick the lenses are, but yes it is possible.

Most common ANSI Z.85 rated safety classes that I've worked with will not stop a .22lr.

I have shot some old pairs of mine and usually the bullet shatters the glasses.

There may be some out there that can stop a bullet, but I have yet to see them.
