I was told by a police officer that some types of chewing gum can actually make you fail a breath test, even if you havn't been drinking. If anyone's ever taken the plastic wrapping off a boc of 50 packs or so, it does smell like some very strong liqour but I'm still not convinced by this one.

Why don't you talk to your police officer friend and ask him to test you after you have chewed various packs of gum.

Anyone else wondering if the OP's friend is trying to preempt anyone who thinks they can drive drunk because their chewing gum will let them pass the breath test?
