I read in a weapons book that the Germans worked on an StG-44 with a barrel that was curved 90 degrees. it was manufactured that way so they didnt just take a barrel and manually bend it. would this have worked? also one other myth i saw in a cartoon where bullets were fired into a series of curved pipes at a good distance away then the bullet came back and hit the shooter. is this at all possible?

All services in WWII had some sort of "shoot around corners" rig.

Ours was a bolt-on attachment for the M3 "grease Gun"
The Germans had a special curved barrel for the Sturmgewher rifle...It was first designed for shooting from the observation ports in tanks, and was found to be useful for house-to-house fighting.
Wore out rapidly, as I recall.

This has come up quite a few times. Some StGs DID have an extra barrel attachment, called the Krummlauf, for shooting around corners, but it could only fire about 300 rounds before it needed to be replaced - which was about 10 mags.
Check the wikipedia page for extra details.

The Stg-44 rifle you are probably thinking about was the Krummerlauf..

It was an experimental design developed in the latter part of the war, and suffered from the fact that the barrel had an incredibly short lifespan. 300 rounds for the 30 degree version, 160 rounds for the 45 degree version in comparison to 10.000 rounds for the ordinary Sturmgëvähr-44

As far as I know it was never put into common use.

Yes, the attachment was called the Krummlauf. The only version of it that was produced in significant numbers was the Krummlauf Vorsatz J. Its barrel only curved 30 degrees. Even then, the muzzle velocity was reduced by over half.

You hear conflicting reports on how effective it was.

Myth Evolution - November 18, 2009
On this episode of MythBusters, it's an evolution revolution as the team takes five fan favorites and focuses on a fascinating new facet for each.

Meanwhile, Kari, Tory and Grant first unload the big guns before they chill out before the grand finale. First, they test another myth from the movie Wanted. Having busted the idea that bullets can curve through the air, they're taking the story up a notch. The movie also portrays another piece of ballistics brilliance - the Corner Shot - a gun that can apparently shoot around corners. Does it exit? Fans want to know!
