obviously the natural fall of the bullet due to gravity would counteract the Coriolis effect in this instance. sheesh. some people

Whoa! My BSometer threw some sparks and smoked, but did its job and placed telecomm1 in the "Ignore User" cache before the circuit breaker tripped.

Now I've gotta go see about resetting those breakers.

I forgot to add that it would also be necessary to increase the MV slightly so that the trajectory would match the curvature of the Earth.

Tele, being ironic or witty requires a sense of humour. Understanding irony or wit just requires commonsense. Unfortunately, some people lack the latter.

The written word often requires the use of a 'smiley" or <sarcasm alert> to insure it is interpreted correctly.

On these boards, with all the insane comments made by the complete Id10ts who very often post here, it is a very good idea to use a smiley or <sarcasm alert> so as to not be mistaken for one of the Id10ts.

In light of your post, I reviewed telecomm1's post and have removed him from Ignore.

Please give a heads up for future sarcasm.

Well, that also kind of depends on who is posting..... Wink

If someone who has been posting here for a long time and has a track record of making correct and informative posts, many of us would have likely know they were making a sarcastic comment even without a smiley. (though not always)

You've only been around about a week, so we don't have much to make a judgement on in reference to your posting style.

Your comment could have just as easily been serious....Stick around here for awhile and you'll see what I mean! Wink

Sorry for the misunderstanding on my part.

Any one see the youtube one where the guy fires a .50 at a target 1000 yds. It hits then ricochets back. It hits the ground a short distance in front of him then bounces up & knocks he 'ear phones' off his head!!
You hear the round hit and come back just after you see the ricochet hit him!
Its wild and the man is lucky, didn't even scratch his ear but he does need new hearing protection & clean skivvies!!

And juust in case you don't bother to look it up, the video is real. He was shooting a steel target with standard M2 ball ammunition. There is nothing fake to it.

i have been reading through these posts on the subject of .50cal rifles. of course there is the constant back and forth of well i know this and you dont know that. so i was thinking on some of the questions. first on my list.
a mear miss with a .50cal can remove skin. i hav heard this before and each time i automatically go "no it wont." a simple study of physics would prove this which i happen to be studying in college. second if you have ever shot firearms you would know this isnt true. i cant how many near hits i have had on all kinds of targets with all kinds of firearms. it ends up being just that a near hit and nothing else. to test this here is an easy test. if you own a firearm tape a piece of paper up the gun barrel next to it and shoot it. you will be experiencing the bullets maximum velocity. some will say its not a .50cal though. truth be told it doesnt matter. a .50cal has a velocity of anywhere from 2700fps to about 3200fps. there are rounds out there in many differnt calibers that will reach those velocities. if you dont hae a firearm hold your hand near a pressure washer.
the second thing that i noticed were some remarks abut depleted uranium rounds and how they work. first off they said the smallest DU rund was a 25mm. actually it is a 20mm. it has been used in the M197 mounted on cobra helicopters the M61 vulcan and phalanx CWIS just to name a few. as for how the round works it is considered self sharpening and pyrophoric. when the round hits a hard target it fragments i a way the sharpens the tip and it starts to burn. usually it basically melts its way through the armor and have bee knwn to blow tanks up from the inside. nowdays DU isnt used as much because of legal issuses and is lots of times replaced with tungsten.
the other thing that caught my attention was the origins of the .50cal sniper rifle. i cant remember where i orginally came across this but if i remember right it as during vietnam and a soldier did it as a bet. typically the .50cal is used as a heavy machine gun though. if you want to see a crazy sniper rifle look up some anti-tank weapons. i forget what country made it but there is a single shot sniper rifle that shoots a 20mm round. now thats one i wouldnt want to shoot.

Unlikely, not for atleast another 20-30 years.

I intend to get public safety pension, then I'll take my money out of the state and buy some place that it is actually affordable to live.

I want to see different variations of the M2 .50 cal HB machine gun's headspace and timing after fired.

I also would like to point out, that when I qualified with the .50 cal; it does knock down rifle targets just by going near them without actually hitting them.

Does it now?

So if you *hit* the target, you just put a neat little hole in it, but if you *miss* it completely it falls over?

Ignoring the hits, if the targets are that poorly secured that they fall over from a miss, what keeps the wind from knocking them over before you even get around to shooting?
