I was watching an episode of Monk. In the episode, the murder was committed by making a homemade silencer by taping a glass bottle over a pistol. This would apparently silence the weapon somehow. Is this actually possible?

Yes this is possible. I have taped a milk jug to my M1A .308. I filled it with foam and that really help in noise reduction.

I don't suppose that you know that making a device and attaching it to a firearm for the purpose of making a suppressor is in fact a violation of Federal Law. Actually, I guess since you posted your crime here on an open forum for all to see, you didn't know that....Well now you do.

No it's not. Not to the human ear, anyway. You would need very sensitive instruments to measure any noise reduction. quote: I have taped a milk jug to my M1A .308. I filled it with foam and that really help in noise reduction.
I don't believe you.

I might be wrong since I've never tried anything this asinine, but it appears that the blast effect, concussion, would shatter the bottle.

Yeah, I would think the bottle would shatter.
