Was this done already? If you put mud on an arrow tip, it will pierce armor.

Come again? I've been involved in archery since I was a kid in the 50s, and I've read a great deal of archery history....Never heard anything like this.
Why on earth would a bit of mud improve penetration?

A crossbow can easily penetrate any practical thickness of classical body armour. It was the rate of fire that rendered them rather impractical.
So, since it would pierce the armour without the mud, I can't really see why it wouldn't also pierce the armour with a dollop of mud on it.

I suppose the mud MIGHT help the arrow cause gangrene or something like that, but only if it's real bog mud. And even then, I doubt it would stay on.

I know some guys who come up with this stuff when they're locked (Irish slang for drunk)

It had something to do with the arrow sticking for a split second or something... otherwise without the mud on the tip, it would glance off.

Ever slipped on a patch of mud?
Mud would have the opposite effect to the one you described.
