I've only been a member here for a little over a week and just in the past few days alone I've seen dozens of threads about hydrogen powered cars, run cars on water, etc. How in the world do you senior members put up with them? I mean these guys ignore the most simplistic scientific explanations that even a caveman could understand.

I personally prefer insulting them until the give up and go away. But that is more for my enjoyment then anything else. The other option is poking them in the eye with a very hot french fry.

theTroll, I've actually read your insults and they've made me laugh so much that I have to get up from my desk at work and walk out into the hallway so no one will hear me.

If ya notice, I really don't just run around insulting people. In fact most of the time I think I am pretty helpful. Just certain people need a little abuse. The shills and anyone that thinks you can pop popcorn with a freaking cell phone.

Oh yeah, the cell phone popcorn thingie. I heard about that for the first time on these forums and a few days later I saw a news article on yahoo news about it. My only reaction was to roll my eyes. (no I didn't read it).

They don't want explanations. They're advertising. They just want the money of the gullible. They *know* they're lying.

It really isn't difficult to tolerate. Back before I took my vacation from the forums, it wasn't uncommon to see 5+ .50 cal myths back to back on the weapons forum; the majority over the exact same thing. I guess it's because I understand what's taking place (having been there before, myself).
1. They watch the show, and see either Mr. Savage or Mr. Hyneman say 'If you have a cool idea for a myth, post it on the forums.' Well, they think of one and believe it to be truly unique. So, instead of looking to see if anyone else has already thought of it, they just sign up, log on, and post the idea without a second thought. I did that a time or two when I first joined. XD
2. They have a question they want answered, so they just ask instead of researching it.
3. They are either bots or spammers. Seriously, over half of the threads newbies start, they NEVER seem to come back and check it, or ever post another idea again. They just make a drive by posting and never come back.

Well, wump, one interesting thing you might want to consider...
Posts get deleted, right? Any post that is inappropriate and reported to moderation gets deleted, for violating the TOS. But what happens when the posts get deleted?
A) The poster never comes back. They either left in a huff over the thread being deleted, or had no intention of coming back in the first place.
B) The poster starts a "you deleted my thread" whine, which also gets deleted.
C) The poster posts the exact same post again, almost word-for-word. When that one is also deleted, the poster returns and starts making test posts, oddly enough usually called "test", to see if their IP is blocked, or why their posts don't "show up".
Interestingly the only posters using method C have had numerous w-4-g threads deleted (and not posted anything else).
Now, unless you're trying figure out how to make your advertising effective and longer-lasting, why do you need to "test" whether posts that don't violate the TOS would be deleted? Or test whether it's your IP? Or try "typos", thinking there might be a "word filter" blocking the post? We all know that if a trigger word is used, you get an indication of it... they don't know that, so they keep "pulsing the system", trying to see how they can get past the site's defenses. They try everything they can think of to get their advertising seen. They add their link to an existing thread, but it gets deleted. They post a new thread, but it gets deleted. They make it so clear that they're advertising and not just asking a harmless question.

Yeah, you're right. Just another one of life's sad truths that I'll have to accept. I'll put it right up there with death and taxes. (sigh)
When that one is also deleted, the poster returns and starts making test posts, oddly enough usually called "test", to see if their IP is blocked
Wow, seriously? I haven't seen one of those yet. I'll laugh when I see one now.
I'll laugh when I see one now.
Well, you have to be fast... they don't usually last long. Generally if MythMod is around to kill their advertising posts within seconds of them being posted, she's also around to kill off the test posts. Sometimes I can get in a "no, your posts all work, they just all get deleted for violating the Terms Of Service" before she sends the test thread off into oblivion. Ya, I know I'm wasting my time, but it feels good. And if the post lingers a while before getting deleted, because the mods are otherwise occupied, they don't really feel the need to "test" their posts... they knew they stayed around, at least for a little while. It's only the ones that vanish practically instantly that get them wondering.

... actually I think the "record" (unofficial of course -- never truly timed it) from a post appearing, through me seeing it and notifying MM, to her killing it off, is under a minute. THAT's what gets them wondering and testing.

I also don't think it's any coincidence (or surprise) that last night I pointed out that the tracking info embedded in the posted URL is a dead giveaway that it was a shill post and not an innocent poster asking for information, and then the very next scam to get posted did *not* have any embedded tracking info in the posted URL, but instead was to a holder URL and not the main website itself, again for tracking purposes.
They *do* keep trying.

They think they can "blend in" and fool us, but they're grossly mistaken.
