Kilz and Kilz2 (http://www.kilz.com/ ) are trademarked names for oil and latex stain blocker/primer. The latex version is white pigmented and very thick - you need one of those puffy rollers to get it to layer right.

I washed the walls the trisodium phosphate - a very very weak solution - to get the shine off the walls and clean them before priming. Patched the holes from the garage type shelving they threw up on the walls after they soaked the room in that electric blue (yuk!), let the patch material dry, sanded and started priming. Because the ceiling is rather high and I'm rather not, I bought some tools specifically for cutting in the paint from the floor. I love all the tools they have for jobs like that. Makes my life easier - I just have to explain why I have paint on my forearms and hands! lol

"Kilz" and "Bin" are brand names for a type of pigmented shellac that will cover and seal just about anything you'd rather forget ever existed (nightmare colors, wood sap, water stains, smoke damage, graffiti, even dried blood). The latex formulation is more pleasant to use and easier to clean up after, and it works for most homeowner-type repainting. The oil-based formulation is great for exterior problems and is also used by disaster-recovery contractors.

This stuff will stick to almost anything and allows to you paint difficult surfaces like laminated paneling or wall tile. Some day-sleepers use it to black out their bedroom windows, because it even adheres to glass.

A helpful tip: If your finish coat is several shades off white, you can ask your paint supplier to tint the stain killer slightly -- it will cover easier.

Couldn't resist adding my two cents' worth. After my dad retired from USAF, he worked in a hardware store. Smile

Leopard,

That's why I love Kilz2! I actually use it to base coat my painted crafts and those stupid glass block monstrosities that people pay good money for. Coat the back with a few layers of Kilz2 and one coat of satin finish polyurethane and the lights reflect off the white and out the front to make mine all that much brighter!

cybermortis

Don't think I haven't thought of that... LOL

Most people I'd say that too, though, would be "Oh, ok." and not give it a second thought.

there are two things you never ask a woman -

Her age and how much or if she gets paid.

See, now I always thought the big 3 taboos were:

her age
her weight
her real hair color

Depends on the woman.

My age isn't a big deal, I'm happy to have made it to 39. I did some pretty stupid things in my youth and it amazes me that I'm not scared and maimed - LOL. My "natural" hair color is black/brown (depending on season - it darkens up in the winter, but I do dye it because it's been so dark for so long I figure it's time for a change) and only my doctor knows my weight as I refuse to own a scale and be a slave to it. My self esteem and self worth isn't based on my outward appearance.

My bank account is none of anyone else's business. I will say this... I love my new house.

thats great mythmod to know( that you are proud to say your age), is very strange though. Because a lot of women get mad when someone ask her age, gets offended also.

But why would that be? sorry for asking, is that i dont know why.

as for the conversation, about house painting I always paint the house all white(interior on the house), i think it matches everything.

Haha, I know loads of women who will tell you their haircolour, weight, age, and whether or not they have strechmarks without so much as a bat of the eyes.

Then I know women who if you so much as ask them the 10 their age is in they will gut you. (and one of those is a 3rd dan blackbelt with 3 gold sparring medals from the SKI british nationals, so her gutting punches HURT)

I think in truth it is mainly how someone is raised as to what they are happen talking about openly.

On the topic of house colours. My current house.
Light eggcream livingroom with pale wood furniture, silver edging and black technological stuff.
Applegreen kitchen with black-white tile floor and pure white cupboards with black countertop and silver appliances.
Bathroom is ocean blue with white tiled shower/bath, white tiled window sil, white cupboard, white linen box, and silver taps, cork tile floor.
My bedroom is a light lavendary purple with medium darkness wooden floor and med-light wood furnitire with silver handles. Big Grin

aerobe_6,

It's because most women are afraid to get old. Me, on the other hand, am grateful for the extra time to wreak havoc and chaos. And I have yet hit my goal in life - to be the neighborhood cat lady.

As for white walls - to me it's boring. I must have some color but not so bright it can leave images on my retinas when I walk away. Maybe I'll post pictures of my dining room when I'm done with the faux finish/mural.

A girl's gotta do something, right?

Given the option-or rather the inclination, which I really don't have-I'd stay away from white walls. I'd pick warmer colours for living spaces-red, orange and the like. Blue is too cold....and I think at this point I may have to go and post the rest as a myth.

I'm not keeping them white - they just need SOMETHING to cover up the ugly.

My kitchen is getting a nice warm Tuscan plaster faux finish with a grape vine mural and a nice light maple floor. The bottom third of the wall is getting a faux tile to match the plaster, using the same colors but with a different texture and technique.

It will take me probably a year before I get the rooms the way I want them - but the covering of the horrid mess was a major first priority.

For how long you since you moved to the new house? because by the looks of it, just guessing probably this month.
You must by a pro, at thid kind of stuff remodeling houses, probably all the work/plans you though of it yourself. Are you a interior designer a bit yourself ?

you had some help by looking at magazines. I dont know, people say that, always thier idea came from mag of home designing. Geez!! by the way, poor mythmod, you spend your christmas vacation re-modeling your house, I hope that someone offered their help, because it must be pretty hard work for you to do it yourself, though.

That would be nice to actually see your handy-work you had done at your house.

I moved in before Christmas and had the living room decently put together so I could actually put up my Christmas Tree. That was very pleasing to me.

I'm not a professional when it comes to remodeling houses, but I did make a living doing murals and faux finishes on walls, furniture, and anything else that would take a coat of paint. I even painted a TOILET SEAT with roses for a client... I found that highly ironic.

I have a tendency to stay away from the decorating magazines because then it's not MY creativity, it's just bits and pieces of someone else's. I will admit, though, I have probably 1,000's of dollars in books on painting and finishing techniques.

When I'm doing with the dining room - I'll post something - a 'before and after' type thing. Don't hold your breath though, it might be a while.

Talking christmas trees, almost every year, I go to tents that people put at the side of the road, and usually buy them a fresh christmas tree. I alwayas get the medium size tree. It just leaves a nice smell in the house(at the end of december), its so wonderful.

A lot of people, just buys the artificial ones, (but its no problem you know), it just that is not the same, even though people say to me, just buy the christmas candles scent, it leaves the same smell as a real pine tree.

You do the same, buy every single year a christmas tree, again sorry for askin'.

When I use the search button, it takes me out of Mythbusters and into Discovery Channel. My response is to the jet blast using the 747 for its effect on different vehicles. I fly for the USAF Auxiliary doing search and recovery, disaster relief, etc. One of our airplanes was damaged in a similar incident as it was taxiing at El Paso around 10:00 pm when the maintenance crew on a jet decided to do a run up without notifying anyone. Besides, I had seen a video showing two different cars being destroyed behind a 747 in a similar incident. Also, you should check out the videos on YouTube and MetaCafe showing aircraft landing and taking off from Princess Juliana Airport. As a pilot I can tell you some similar stories from the experiences of fellow pilots and even my own experience with a storm front.

Airman, don't use "search".

At the top of the list of threads is a series of tabs - "Go-New-Find-Tools-Reply". Use the "find" tab, and make sure to uncheck the "search current forum only" box.
