My Dad passed away recently & the last time we spent together was spent watching Mythbusters. After the show I pulled up the sight & we looked at everything (Kari, he especially like your Myspace page). He was waiting on DSL so that we could get him a login & I could show him how to post. He wanted to share his story. So here it is & I hope that I get everything right.

When he was a young man he worked at the local gas station. The way the station was set up was that at the back of the station was the women’s & men’s restrooms & the battery Rack. In the space between the restrooms they kept a 1 gallon gas can full of gas. One day someone’s car overheated & that person emptied the gas can into the men’s toilet, unbeknownst to anyone. A while later my dad was charging batteries when one of the local young men came by & bummed a cigarette off of him. My dad said the guy went into the restroom & a few minutes later my Dad said he heard a loud whoosh, & the guy fell out the restroom door on fire. This is when I went OMG what did you do? He said “I took my Jacket off & smothered the fire out & then I noticed that the toilet had flames in it about a foot & ½ to 2 feet tall.” I again went OMG what did you do? He sighed & said “I reached over & flushed the toilet & put the fire out.”

He said that the guy had gone in, sat down, lit his cigarette, & dropped the match into the toilet. He also said the guy had 1st, 2nd & 3rd degree burns & wasn’t able to sit down for a month. Ouch!

I hope you enjoy his story as much as I did & as much as he enjoyed telling it.

Thank you,

Kearney

I worked at gas stations in my teen years, and I fail to understand why in the blue susie anyone would keep a one gallon can of gas betweeen the restrooms. Why would anyone with half a brain pour that gas down the toilet because a car overheated? This has all the earmarks to me of a made up tale.

There are several versions of this tale on the internet and were spread as urban myths for years before the computer age. They even tested a version of it on mythbusters and busted it. Check the program guide.

Well the gas can was kept on the floor between the 2 doors to the restrooms. & the story is actually true. My Dad got a commendation from the mayor for quick thinking. Of course he was the fire chief at the time, & I'm sure that he would say he was just doing what anyone would have done.

i'm sorry about your dad.
i guess i know how you feel, when i was seven my dad died.

anyway, its been tested on MB, but when i was watching it, i saw how it could have actaully happened, but i dont think it was the correct mixture of air/fuel content when the MB tested it.

but anyway hope everything goes well.

Lordfrogenall, please don't try to use common sense. It just doesn't;t work here. Smile

aunt kk, I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. But I think something is missing or has been misinterpreted in your story.

In your original post it quite clearly says that your dad was young and working at a gas station.

In your second post he is no longer an emplyee of the gas station. He is now the fire chief.

Sounds to me like a male bovine passed through here and left us all a nice steamie present!

To clear up some misconceptions by young I ment in his 20's & he was the fire chief at the time because he helped to start the volunteer Fire department. They started it with a donated fire pumper that you had to pull behind a truck. Sorry but I wasn't really listening to that story. He saw a need & tried to fill it. The town in question is tiny still under 300 people. You can believe what you want. He was a great person whom I miss & I'm sure that if he had been able to tell his story it would have been better. I am telling it 2nd hand.
