Since you're still young, just continue to learn all that you can. Ready any and all books you can about weather, it is important to understand how the weather works if you want to be able to forecast and know exactly what's going on and plus the knowledge you will gain about storm structure will allow you to recognize the different areas of a thunderstorm.

Learning at this point is the most important thing to do. Contact your local National Weather Service office or look on their website and find out when they hold spotter training in your area. At least get a head start on your spotter training, when you get older you can find an experienced spotter or chaser to go with and learn the ropes.

GRLevel3 is a great product, it along with StormLab are the two best radar software's out there. Of course they do come at a price, but it's a one time fee and it is well worth the money. GRLevel3 is about $80, perhaps it could be something you could ask for as a Christmas present.

As for websites, I would start with http://www.theweatherprediction.com/habyhints. It is a great educational site with a lot of information that you should be able to learn a lot from.

ya dudes i drive a tractor trailer pulling dubbel trailers from ct to salt lake city utha for FED-X GROUND,via rt 80,i want to thank the discovery channel, and the whole storm chasing team ,for risking your lifes to show how dangerous tornados are, driving tracror trailers is dangerous enough dealing with the blizzards, high wind and crazy weather but if we get caught in a tornados storm we are screwed,we cant turn around with dubbel trailers, and we only get about 65mph on a good day let alone the high winds,so we cant out run sh-t,i have exp with tornados in fl.

Dear stormchasingfan,
I am just like you, exept younger. It took me about a week to get hooked on the the show. Now, I am so excited to be able to drive (which is in a very long time) So i can go storm chasing. So far, i am the only one in my school of about 450 kids that is obsessed with storm chasing. Also, i am annoying my friends by rambling on about how cool this show is and how cool tornadoes are. were any of you people like that when you were younger? Because I feel like I am alone.
(Just so you know, I am not THAT young)

Hey. I'm 16 and I just recently became interested in storm chasing. I was sooo excited because I finally found something I want to do, but then I began reading up on it and it turns out you apparently can't make a living off of it. Which means it would basically have to be a hobby....which is depressing... If anybody has any suggestions as to jobs you could have on the side of being a storm chaser, please let me know. That would be great Smile

Lol, same here..
I'm also twenty, live in the Netherlands and bound to go on a stormchasingtrip!
It's quite weird for me though.. Ever since I almost got struck by lightning when I was 5 years old.
And still got a little scared of storms, because of that.
But there is something inside of me that really wants so see a real tornado and try to get as close as possible!
Funny huh? xD
Anyway, it's nice to hear that you like tornadoes that much and I really think you should follow your dream!
Good luck and I'll hope to hear some cool adventures from you soon!

Hey, me too. Well, you actually can make a living off it but it's pretty tough. Not only getting someone to pay you for it, but also to meet your quota. If you REALLY want to make some good money off it, try learning a little more about colleges that are big in the industry such as the School of Meteorology at University of Oklahoma. Otherwise, it doesn't hurt to chase for fun!!

I want to be a storm chaser later, but I live in ohio. I only saw one funnel cloud when I was 7 or 8. I can't wait to track storms this season. GO SEVERE WEATHER Smile

Well, at least you aren't that far away from tornado alley... I'm stuck out here on the west coast in California. We get usually get one or two tornadoes a year but I've still yet to catch one. But anyway, I still plan to chase in the near future as a hobby. Good luck tracking!! Can't wait till this year's season!!

Actually, the NOAA doesn't have any real age requirements for being in SKYWARN or being a spotter, but I think they want you to be at least 13. I joined a little earlier this year and they were happy to have me. I've actually read that a few spotters were around the age of 10. So I'm sure they won't mind your age...

Let me first say, I realize you are young, but... Everyone on this message board probably likes to watch severe weather, including myself. I live in tornado alley and would appreciate you not "cheering on" the severe weather. I know it will happen, but no cheering please! Saying things like "go severe weather" is not appropriate in my opinion.

What's up everybody, call me Cambles. I'm in college right now, for meteorology, and was wondering if i could begin chasing, that's what i really want to do, more than anything else. I live in PA and get little action, tornado-wise, but am willing to move out to the plains, for the season, to start out as a rookie and learn from the professionals. If any professionals need some help, i'm willing to, even with little pay, that's understandable. let me know with a reply. I could start this season, since we would be driving all over the plains, i will need little for housing and such. Smile PEACE! Hope for a reply!

Well It's been a while since I was here, but I guess I didn't lie. I am now a storm chaser, I am the Lead Forecaster/Owner of Great Lakes Storm Chasing, and currently I am in the making of a new tornado probe! It's definatly amazing with what you can do in a couple months I learned everything and started my own storm chasing team, and will have a tornado probe. Storm Chasing Fan it comes naturally to you real quick! Smile -Brandon
