HI there Skyler's mom. I hope you continue to suport him in persuing his intrest. Even if he moves on to something different later on. It will be important to his development as a well adjusted grown man.

Encourage him to go ahead and design a T.I.V 3 of his own. I'd like to see it myself.

The parents, grandparents and maybe some other close family or friends. Aside from that, unless the kid is child prodigy, not many.

It's a live and let live sort of a thing as far as I'm concerned.

Stormchasermomma, continue to encourage your son, when I was young we had a tornado go tearing thru our town, and that made my mother terrified of every thunderstorm. When I was old enough to, I recieved a weather station as a gift, that was the beginning of a life time of studying weather and it's extremes. In my teens I tried to get photos of lightning, and was a miserable failure. With the new digital cameras coming onto the market I tried again to capture lightning photos. I had some success, and that motivated me to try even harder. Now I have a website for lightning enthusiasts. There I share my love for lightning photos and even have a couple videos there also. At this time my love for lightning photos has taken the next step and combined with my passion for photography motivated me to write a book about night time photography, which is finished and being shopped around to publishers.. always encourage your son to follow his passions, you never know where they will lead him in his life.
you can see my work here

if your son has any questions that you think I may be able to help him with, or just help him stay motivated on his path in life, there is contact info on the site

Stormchasermomma,
I am glad to hear your son is into storm chasing. If you haven't done any research already on the subject of chasing, there are a few things to think about other than what you see on the show and on the news about storm chasers.

1.) Get into Amateur (HAM) Radio with a Technician NO Code License. Many SKYWARN Storm spotters and Storm Chasers use 2m/70cm ham gear to comunicate. Also, look into joining a local radio club associated with the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) and check in on ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) as many such people are also involved in storm spotting and SKYWARN.
2.) Attend a NWS SKYWARN training session in your area. This is FREE training and open to the public. I grew up in the heart of Tornado Alley on the Texas Panhandle-South Plains region. When I finally attended, at age 30, a SKYWARN school put on by Alan Moller, I realized I had been witnessing the powerful dynamics of the atmosphere without really knowing what I was looking at for all those years.
3.) Look up on Google, Alan Moller, Chuck Doswell, John Davies, and Tim Samaris; these guys are the pioneers of Storm Chasing and have loads of wisdom and safety to pass along from their many years of chasing.

I was pretty stoked when I saw my hometown of Plainview featured on the 2nd episode of the 2009 season of "Stormchasers" and pretty much new exactly every place was profiled on that episode. Google April 29, 2009 Plainview Texas Tornadoes and you will see alot more than what was shown on the show.

Encourage your son to get into science, ham radio, photography, and SKYWARN, and make it a family affair as well. If he isn't already involved in Cub/Boy Scouts, that is another venue in which to get involved in all of the above.

Spot and Chase safely,

Charlie Johnson, KD5AWS
