I have seen a couple of times that dogs from over seas can be brought here to a family waiting to adopt them. I am despereatley trying to find out if this is true and what organization I can get in touch with to help me look into this. I would like to bring a specific dog home as a surprise for my husband. Please let me know any information anyone might have. Thanks a lot.

Importing dogs is quite common. All my dogs are imported. What breed of dog are you looking for? Why can't you get one in the states?

Hi I was also wondering about adopting a dog from overseas, Is it possible, allowed, what are the requirements, or is it taboo. The reason I am inquiring is because my sister was looking for a pet and fell in love with this cute bulldog that is somewhere near South Africa. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Personally, I would never import a dog that I have never met. The dog may be cute, but it could have a horrible temperment or major health problems. Never get a dog from a breeder you don't know. You need to see the area your dog was raised in and how it was socialized and stuff. Or else you can get one of the worst dogs in your life. The only time I think someone should ever import a dog is if they know their breed really well, have spoken to the breeder a lot, have seen real paper work on the heath testing that has been done (on the particular dog, and its parents) etc. Getting a dog that you haven't even met before and barely know anything about is just a recipe for disaster.
I say find a breeder that you are comfortable with that's within distance to meet and see the environment the pup has been raised in, see health testing records, etc. This way you can be sure you are getting a good dog. There are plenty of cute bulldogs around the country. Get in contact with the parent club (you can find it at akc.org) and find a breeder on their referalls. For the most part, these breeders are responsible breeders and won't cheat you.

I too sall an add in a newspapaer about an english bulldog. She is in Africa and the owners are asking 650 for the shipping fee. something doesn't seem right about it. The add was in the Orlando Sentinel, which is a local newspaper here in Orlando Fl.

With all the dogs available in our own country including the millions in shelters, why would anyone want to import a pet?

The risks of being scammed when importing a pet are tremendous! Anyone foolish enough to do that is just asking for trouble and deserves everything they get including the heartache!

purchsing pets through these sources is encouraging animal abuse and cruelty!!!!!!!!!!

Sure it's a scam. If it was truly someone's pet, they'd simply send the dog back to family or friends until they'd completed their mission.
Actually, they wouldn't have taken a dog along with them in the first place.

With internet scams of any sort, once they throw religion into the mix, that's a dead give away!

With the millions of dogs in shelters across the US, you want to import one? ConfusedConfused

If you are looking for a family pet, please consider looking in your local animal shelter first. If you want a specific breed, it would behoove you to search for a local breeder or breed rescue. By talking to the breeder direct you can view the sire and dam of any potential pups. You will be able to learn of temperament, health problems, and how the pup was socialized.

I just realized how that sounded. Please insert your country into the spot where I wrote “US”. I realize that not everyone on this board is from the States. However the rest of my post will apply to any other country. Don’t overlook the wonderful dogs that are near you for a dog with potential problems that you have never seen.

It's more than possible it is near certainty. Get the requirements from your airline, and just follow their directions, which usually means- getting a health certificate from a vet, and temperature requirements for the dog, as long as you follow what they need, its not a problem at all, its very common.
