First off it would be nice to know what kind of dog you have. When a dog has a fear of something don't be to forceful when trying to get them to doit. it can put a lot of needless stress on the dog. Take it slow give rewards may be use a favorite toy to help. And depending on how old the pup is it might not be ready yet. need more information about dog to help further.

The best way to get your dog in the water is for you to get in and swim yourself. I suggest you wait until summer then go to the nearest lake or river and jump in. DO NOT FORCE YOUR DOG INTO THE WATER OR THROW HIM IN OR HE WILL NEVER WANT TO SWIM AGAIN.

I had a dog that was afraid of water (it wasn't my dog, I was asked to train him) and what I did was I started with a hose pipe and a bowl.

I would turn the hose on slow and fill the bowl with water in plain sight of the dog. THe thirsty dog came for a drink. Later I upped the pressure and the water splashed around. The dog didn't really like the splashes, but it understand water was to drink.

Later, a hard plastic kiddie pool, same hose, dog came to drink from the pool. I got in a bathsuit and sat in an inch of water in the pool, with a bag of treats in my lap. The neighbors thought I had lost my mind!

Finally the dog climbed in the pool and I gave him a treat for his effort. He plopped his butt in the inch of water. At first he yelped around and then he sat back in it and had the goofiest grin.

I had my brother turn on the hose and sat n the pool with the dog with a hose in my lap slowly filling the pool while I kept the dog occupied with treats.

Since the goal was to give the dog a bath in the first place, my brother climbed in with the shampoo and we had a pool party/dog bath.

The dog had fun and to this day they have a hard time keeping him out of the kiddie pool!

If the dog doesnt like something frocing them is only going to make it worse

I like the kiddie pool idea. I have one for my dogs during the summer because it gets so hot. I would take their toys and place it in the pool then start playing with it. Jeffrey loves the pool. he like to run in circles in it and just stand.

Kassie my water obessed dog will not go in the pool. We havent figured out why yet- we think she doesnt like the feel of the plastic. But I wont force her into the pool. She does however love to play with the hose.

Definitely try everything in the summer. Jeffrey doesnt have a thick coat so he gets cold fast in water (we have to give him baths in the tub so he can have warm water)
Its all about finding out what your dog likes without forcing them into anything

I have an Akita. They are not supposed to be water dogs. However, she plays with a Lab that loves to swim and retieve sticks from the water. She has learned to love the water!

Galaxy,

Just thought I'd say that's a great idea and I'm going to try it with Casey this summer! She absolutely hates the water, and I'd like to take her out swimming some time this summer.

when i was growing up i had a pug who HATED getting wet.

unfortunately, we were in a coastal community. on a reservation right on the ocean, next to a big river.

our little pug followed us everywhere. he'd come down to the beach and watch us swim and whine and whine the farther away from him we were.

eventually though, he couldn't handle us being so far away so he'd just jump in and swim to us. hehe, but he was a spoiled fat dog so we always had to come and meet him in the middle or he'd run out of energy and sink.

poor baby.

good exercise though. ^_^

We had a lab mix who was afraid of the water. We heard that she or at least some of her littermates almost drowned when they were puppies, so that was probably why.

At first, when we went to the river and our German Shepherd jumped in to swim, the lab mix would bark and be nervous. Eventually, without any prompting from us humans, the lab mix got used to water and even loved it. Not sure how long it took though.
