My first visit here. Hello to all. Anyone have a suggestion for a dog that licks his back paws constantly. They get really soar and sometimes will bleed. I can't seem to make him stop. My vet was no help. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Or even a reason why he does it. Thanks, Tucker's mom.

Paw licking is often associated with food allergies. What are you feeding?

My dogs do that all the time. It is usually a sign of allergies. You might want to do some thing about it soon, I didn't and know I HAVE to give my dog 15 pills a day because his allergies got so bad! And he also as a yeast infection in his ear. maybe try getting a new vet?

Sorry I can not figure out how to post to a reply someone gave me. so maybe you will see it this way,
I am feeding Tucker Purina One usually Lamb sometimes the chicken. I did get some help from the vet but that was because Tucker's foot got pretty raw. I took prednisone, anitbiotic and antihistamine. It really helped alot but once the meds were gone it starts all over again.

Purina One dog food is really low quality chow for dogs. It's mainly made up of corn, and it's nutrition level is low. Any food that you can buy at Wal-Mart, Menards, etc. are all low quality foods. Your best bet is to go to a local pet store (not a Petco or Petsmart either, because their foods really aren't that great either), and try a food like Chicken Soup, Innova, Wellness etc. They are most expensive, but because they are more nutritional for your pet, you will have to feed them much less for them to get the same full feeling that they get off of dog food that is full of grain fillers.

I would suggest feeding him a new high quality food, and since you mainly feed him Lamb, switch to something that has no Lamb in it.

Try that for a solid six weeks, and if no improvement occurs, try a food with no chicken for six weeks.

Allergies in dogs is actually very common, and the best way to deal with it is to just switch dog foods until you find something that agrees with your dogs skin.

Many people may tell you that Lamb is hypo-allergenic, but that is untrue. When Lamb hit the market as a dog food, it was advertised as hypo-allergenic because it wasn't a naturally occurring food in almost all dogs diets, and most dogs didn't exhibit reactions to it. That doesn't mean that some aren't allergic though.

Good luck!

I have a Dalmation/springer mix that licks her paws raw. My vet said it is a granular limpoma. I put a triple antibiotic salve on it to help avoid infection. My vet said it's fine. It won't hurt her because you KNOW she'll lick it off... Then the rest of the day (when I'm home) I keep her from licking it. Usually all I have to do now is say "NO LICKING!!" This is her 2nd bout with it & now she knows THAT command...

I have one question: do you have abundant, lush grass in your yard? If so, I can near guarentee Tucker's licking involves an irritation to the sharp blades. It's like a rash; wouldn't you want to scratch it? My dogs did the same thing last year but once winter rolled around they stopped. Try (though I don't like "doggie dress-up") dog footies. Try to secure them because he'll probably try to pull them off.
