When we first got sugar, we bought a little puppy collar. She kept it on with no issue. The past week she has been managing to get it off repeatedly. When we tried to put it back on her, we'd have to wrestle her down to get it snapped back on.
Yesterday morning I saw it was off again, but I was tired and didn't feel like wrestling her so I tossed it on the desk and left for work. Last night I came home and I had a huge mess to clean up so I forgot about the collar. Well I come across the collar and started to put it on but she fought me again. I said "forget it" and tossed the collar on the desk again.
About an hour later she had her paws in my lap and her nose in the air and I noticed... she was missing the fur on the under side of her neck. Horrified, I pulled her in my lap and started inspecting her neck. Upon further inspection I discovered that her neck was just absolutely raw. her whole neck was raw all the way around her neck from where she apparently had just grown too big for it.
I feel HORRIBLE that I did not notice this sooner No wonder she was fighting me so hard! I know better than this! It was loose on her when we got it, and I just thought it seemed kinda tight on resnap because she was fighting so much
So now she's collarless until I can buy a big collar, and not a new puppy collar
And I find myself thinking of all those dogs I've seen on TV with imbedded collars and I think.. how can you let it get to THAT point? It was bad enough that in my stupidity I didn't notice it was rubbing her little neck raw...
Well I can see why you feel badly, however this is more so a good reminder that a sudden change in behavior to check the dog over for any changes medically. Very good of you to post this. You may feel badly, but hopefully its a good reminder to us all.
it's not as bad as I thought, but I have been keeping an eye on it. It's just really read all around. There's no broken skin, but there's an obvious line around her neck were she's missing fur and right up under her chin is where it's the gapping bare spot.
well i made the same mistake with my old black lab sam. i found my sharpaie likcing his neck and i screamed terrified and i screamed for my mother. and i saw the collar was to tight and a cut (tiny) some what laot of blood not really umm was right there and we i think took him to the vet. and the cut healed and we bought hima new collar that fit him
It's an easy mistake to make. I used to have a kitty who would walk on a harness. At some point, she got a little too big for it, and I tried to put it on her anyway. It was just too tight, it didn't scrape her fur, but she was obviously uncomfortable. After that, she was never as willing to let me put a harness on her, even the new bigger harness.
Our little Rat terrier, Lyle, had the same problem. The collar we used chafed his fur, so now it won't grow back. Try using a different type of collar ((We had a nylon, but now he has a leather one)) it might just be a slight reaction to the type of collar.
Well, I'm glad you found the problem before it ended up being embedded. We are human-we all make mistakes. But just consider this a lesson learned. That's why I constantly watch Katie's collar and check it everyday to ensure that it's loose enough on her that she can move around. So far, so good.
