I don't agree with that at all(what your brother said) I mean dogs always follow girls and girls cre for them and when you hear about a dog being abused it's always a man who did it. (sorry to bring that up) anywho who ever made that up was p[robably one dumb man who was trying to show off. It should be woman's best friend

Actually the saying came up during a court case. I believe the man's dog had gotten shot, and he claimed dogs were man's best friend. I don't remember the whole story about it, but if I find time I'll try to look it up.

Found it!

"George Graham Vest speaking:

"Gentlemen of the jury, the best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter whom he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us -- those whom we trust with our happiness and good name -- may become traitors in their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolute, unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world -- the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous -- is his dog.

"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and poverty, in health and sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow, and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace, and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death."

OMG. Why don't you and your brother make up a schedule on who gets to walk him every other day? You one day him another. If you guys can't be mature about who walks him maybe your mom or dad should.

Alright- first of all- you said Sammy was returned in a box- .. Second- maybe neither of you should walk the dog since Smokey has gotten away..

GREAT QUOTE?
This is a quote I read a long time ago. I do not remember who wrote it, or where I saw it. In fact, I will be paraphrasing it. But it does make your think.

On this chance planet, there are thousands and thousands of species. We are just one of them. There is other species that has formed a most unique bond with us, the dog. In fact, if it wasn't for dogs, as a species we would be utterly alone on this planet.

Think about that for a minute. There are other animals we keep for companionship. There are animals that even seem to enjoy human company. But none of them approach the human-canine bond.

It doesn't matter who is his best friend. You and your brother are both his friends equally. Unless he is YOUR dog.

MORE THAN FRIENDS
Dogs are more then friends and companions. We owe our very existence to them.

There was civilization before the horse. There was civilization before the wheel. There was never any human civilization before the dog. No dog, no humanity.

Are you talking about wild dogs or domestic dogs? Domestic dogs only appeared around 10,000-15,000 years ago.

Domestic dogs. It appears that dog was very instrumental in humans devoloping into what we are today. The spread of human civilzation seems to coincide with the domestication of dogs. Dogs allowed early humans to venture outside their caves. They also helped with the domestication of other animals like sheep and cattle.

Humans and Neanderthals(sp) existed together. There are many theories to try to explain why we survived and they didn't. One theory suggests that humans formed a bond with dogs. That gave them the edge over the Neanderthals, thus the edge to evolve.

Of course it does! My mom and I were discussing recently how people just don't seem to understand anymore that the term "man" means "mankind". Which, of course, means all humans regardless of gender. I never read that quite and then thought only of the male species, and I'm never offended when people use the word "man" to refer to all humans.

the term man, doesn't always mean, well.... man. In the bible, when it talks about all men, it is really talking about human beings. The term "dogs are man's best friend" means that dogs are the best friends of human beings.

Well first of all, when they say "man" it just refers to humanity as a whole, not just men.

And it's just the personality of the dog, or the owner that makes it change, some dogs prefer women...but I've met a lot of dogs that love me more than any girl.

Man= mankind....simple as that

Every dog has a preference as to who they like. Kassie my female would sell out in a second if a guy walked in the door. Actually she gets excited for anybody new because it means she gets more attention. I guess then that she is everybodys best friend only because she wants endless attention and petting

Jeffrey on the other hand is VERY picky. He is does not like men. I think it stems from when he was a puppy. We think that before we found him he was abused. If you are a guy it will take you awhile to gain Jeffrey's trust and once you do he still could care less. With women he is really shy but not as much as he is with men. He is not the type of dog that tries to smell everybody when going out. Really keeps to himself. He is socialized with people all the time but has never really changed so we just accept it. So Jeffrey's "best friends" really are my mom, Kassie and I. We really are the only people he fully trusts. Its kind of nice because it makes him a great guard dog Big Grin.

I really do not believe in the concept of "this is my dog" with in a family. Dogs dont see one person and believe that they belong to them. The family is a unit that they live. The dog should be everybodys dog.

Oh yeah- if your brother walks the dog one day then you walk him the next time. Its not really anything to get into fights about
