You won't believe this. I just read about this in today's paper. Yesterday, Friday, the government approved a drug called Slentrol. It is a drug to help fat dogs get skinny.

It reduces the amount of fat a dog can absord. It also triggers a feeling of fullness. Side effect? Loose stools, diarhea, vomiting, lethary, and loss of appetite.

This is freaking unbelievable. Mad

Have we become so lazy, so uncaring, that pills will be used to keep Fido from being fat? Is it any wonder dogs are having other emotional issues? They do have drugs to help with behvior issues too.

They need to invent one new drug. People take it before adopting a dog. If they are the wrong person to have a dog, this drug will cause uncontrolled vomiting and extreme nausea. At least this will save pain for the poor dogs.

See below for another thread on the same topic.

Yes, it's a pretty sad state of affairs. We overfeed our dogs and then give them pills to "correct" it that makes them sick. Poor doggies!

I wonder what its intended purposes are?

I know someone who owns a rather large dog that gains weight easily due to a drug she's on for a medical problem.

But if this is going to be available to people who simply won't regulate their dog's food properly or exercise him, then I agree it's ridiculous. I hope people don't actually see this is as a solution to their dogs' obesity because they don't exercise them enough. The dog may avoid joint problems by losing the weight, but he's still not going to be nearly as healthy physically or mentally as he would be given proper exercise. :/

I would guess that the intended purpose is to get free animal testing (product history) of a product which will eventually be developed for the human market.

I hate to sound unsympathetic to those with weight problems ( My wife once weighed 300 lbs) but it all comes down to balance. If you consume more calories you must exercise them off. The same applies to dogs.
Many people mistakenly think that a dog left out in a yard gets enough exercise chasing squirrels etc; but if you were to watch them , you would probably discover that their favorite activity is sleeping in the sun or shade (depending on the weather) with brief periods of activity (alertness when something changes in the environment like the mailman or someone walking their dog or a squirrel actually entering the yard).
So either you have to measure the food and if necessary switch to a dietary ( or "lower quality " ) food where they get fewer calories even when they eat more or provide more exercise and play time.

Heck, with giving it to the dogs..I am not a couch potato by no means, but it this drops the weight off...I'll try it!! We share bendryl and other meds, why not this?? Wink

Just kidding. Sad, but alot of people try to find weightloss in a bottle and find out it takes diet and exercise as well. They just mentioned on TV that they (FDA) are going to go after the diet pill companies that are misleading the public. A lifestyle change for man and beast is what needs to be tried first, before taking any pills.
