There is a dog at the end of my street that is part rottie so he is a big dog. He has been chained to a tree for the 5 and 1/2 years i have lived here. His chain allows him some moving space but not much especially when there are usually trucks parked in half of it. for the first couple of years they fed him a plate of hot dogs once or twice a week and his only water was snow and a muddy puddle. Recently they have given him a pitcher of water and a pitcher of dog food. his dog house has dirty bedding and is about to collapse. I have seen him of his chain once the whole time i have lived here. I have never seen the owners give him any attention at all. One winter it was below 0 and windy and his chain was frozen to the ground. He couldnt move more than a few inches. I went and told the owner and she glared at me and said that " she'll take care of it" and then she slammed the door in my face. luckily she did take care of it. Is this animal abuse? what should i do? and one of my options is not to get to know the owners because they are mean and they get drunk all the time. my friendly dog that loves everyone attacked one of them because she smelled something on him and he couldnt even kick her because he couldnt kick straight.
Oh my gosh, that's horrible. No attention? no water? hardly any food? wow. Call the cops or something. If they get drunk all the time then that's bad too because they might do something stupid like hurt it. And aparently it needs medical care because it can't kick straight! And hot dogs aren't meant for dogs. And they need to be taking better care of it. They can go to jail for stuff like that. I would call the cops and tell them all about that. I hate it when people do that
i went by today and gave harley ( the dog) a peice of bologna. he was so excited. when i got up close i realized that his coat is matted and dirty. other than his coat i dont have any real proof of animal abuse. what should i do?!
I think you need to contact the animal protections in your area and have them be the judge. It is totally disgusting and totally degrading for a dog to be separated from its pack (the humans). I feel this is animal abuse and there are guidelines to what kind of shelter they have and the length of the chain etc. But, you need to find out who deals with this sort of animal neglect in your area! Don't be afraid! These people are disgusting for doing this to this poor animal and the worst that can happen is nothing and the best that can happen is the animal can get the help it needs. Good luck to you!!
there is one more thing.. i am not sure how nice harley is. i havent petted him or got close enough for him to reach me but i think he is nice. Im kind of careful about getting to close to a chained up dog. if he isnt freindly wont he have to be put down? so wouldnt he be better off there, than dead?
No, he would not be better off there. Have you ever watched Animal Planet Heros? Alot of the dogs they rescue arnt used to humans, they work with the dogs and usually they get better and eventually get adopted into a loving home where the people actually want them and care for them!

Lol I just realized how I put that.
No, I don't remember the name of the movie, I just know it was a really silly movie about the "mafia" and the main character was "undercover" at a junkyard and this rotty was visciously barking at him and he turns to the gang members and goes "you know, bad dogs aren't born, they're made".
It wasn't "a goofy movie" it was a "goofy" as in silly movie :P
Hey Jade, I feel bad for that dog too. Well in my neighborhood this really mean guy had a german sheperd and he always hit it, screamed at it, and aimed a gun at it to scare him. That man died last November, and the cops tried to get in his house, but the idiot shot the poor thing instead of tranquilizing it because it wouldn't let them in. I have a pet Rotty named Rocky, he's turning 2 in late July, he is really hyper active.
Report your suspicions to the proper authorities in your area and have them check it out. That way they will not know who turned them in. BTW-any young kids in their household? If they are nasty to the dog, they are probably the same with their children.
Call your local animal shelter and ask them who you need to report the abuse to, them or the police. Hopefully someone will come and rescue that poor animal.
*I'm not sure where they draw the line on abuse of an animal. It's sad. I just want to wrap my arms around that dog, feed and water him and give him a bath and love him up so he knows someone cares.
is there any water out there currently? if there isn't then i would say call! if i were you i would start to take care of the dog, like start to feed it every day and give it water and maybe brush it, get it a doghouse....suff like that. eventually the owner will realize that you care about their dog and might hand it over to you.
For the love of God report those people!! That poor dog is being neglected! They won't put him down unless he's aggressive and if you can come up to him and feed him & pet him he'll be ok.
Now call animal control and get him out of that awful home!!
