Breeds depend on your family and how things run at your place. A nice thing to do would be to get a dog from a shelter or pound. If you do want purebred, you can find them there or purebreed rescues.
Myself, I prefer giant breed dogs. I have three Great Danes myself and I think that they're wonderful. My partner and I have a two year old and all of them get along extremely well with him.
As canterbury said, it all depends on you. Your living arrangements, your budget, your energy level, who you live with, your experience with dogs, etc. There is no one best dog.
Then, what are you looking for in a dog? You need to look at a dog's energy level, grooming maintenance, size, etc. If you are looking for a specific breed, look at rescues that deals with that breed. If you're not, then check out your local animal shelter. Good luck!
