Buddy, not giving dog's real name (just in case), is a Saint Bernard Mix. He has an owner, but he doesn't EVER take care of him. We found out he was really under weight when my mom said that he really looks like part St. Bernard. They can get up to 200 lbs. Anybody can tell he weighs less than that (his weight we don't currently know). Today, it was really windy so my mom and dad let him in. A little while ago we, my mom & I, gave him a bath. We feed him twice a day and make sure he has fresh water. And when it gets too cold, and he's near us, we let him inside. Also, when we finally move, we are going to take him with us w/o his owner knowing (remember, his owner doesn't EVER take care of him).

So here's my question. Are we doing the right thing for him?

Thanks!! And no, he doesn't know. We're afraid that if he finds out, he'll take Buddy away or "fight us" (not literally) for him. I can't stand the though of just knowing that he's being mistreated.

Yes. You are absolutly doing the right thing. I would do the same thing. Not telling the owner is a great idea. It is the best thing for the dog. Remember that. You want to do what is best for the animal. Unless of course it's against the law or anything like that. I would do that too. It will teach the owner a lesson so if he gets another dog, he will take care of it and not neglect it like he did the Saint Bernard. You're only doing it because it is best for the dog.

You may be doing what is best for the dog, but you are ABSOLUTELY BREAKING THE LAW!!! You must know that you can't just take someone's pet without their knowledge...

My suggestion would be to talk to your neighbor. Tell them that you're moving and say how much you will miss their dog. Tell them that your mom said she would love to take "Buddy" with you. Who knows??? Maybe they will take you up on the offer.

Whatever you do... DO NOT STEAL THE DOG! There are stiff penalties for things like that. If you are seriously worried about the welfare of the dog, contact your local animal control.

YES!
I do think you're doing the right thing.
The St. Bernard is obviously not being taken care of.
I do understand that it's illegal but still, the dog is being mistreated, and obviously likes yall.
I would just think about it very carefully, and do whatever you think is best for "Buddy"Big Grin

Hope I helped!!

I agree.

You have good intentions, but you are going about it the wrong way.

1. Yes, we realize this. But we're here to talk about BUDDY's well being. Not laws.
2. It is also against the law to NEGLECT ANIMALS.
3. We don't care what happens to us. I will personally give you my home address. I don't care.
4. He's stubborn. He says he keeps dog food inside the house all day. He has NO PORCH so he has NO DOG DOOR and he keeps his house locked. Buddy is out ALL DAY!!

Trust me, I know the law. I don't care what happens to me, ONLY Buddy.

Oh, and also:

5. No animal shelter around here will take him. All the ones around here rescue from Kill Shelters.

I'm cringing at that reply. Laws are in place for a reason, going over and beyond laws for the sake of what you deem right is very wrong.

No one is above the law for any reason, and when people take it "into their own hands", end results are usually a disaster.

Not to mention I bet you are a minor as well.

Oh, and I'm 44. Apparently you're a bad judge of character but I should expect that from someone who is possibly younger than me.

Then let the police/humane society take care of it, you are obviously not the law. You asked, "Are we REALLY doing the right thing"?, and now are SO MAD that someone disagrees with you. Laughable at best. You are not doing the right thing.

Apparently you don't know the law or you wouldn't be asking if it's o.k. to steal someone's pet.

Unfortunately, not everyone sees their pets as being a priority. Many people think that providing food, water and shelter is enough. Just because your neighbor doesn't treat his animal as you see fit doesn't make it neglect. I agree that it is sad to see a pet left alone in the yard for hours on end, but unless it is dangerously cold (and St. Bernards can tolerate a lot) or too hot, it is not against the law.

Again... if you are concerned, contact your local animal control. Most likely they will just talk to your neighbor and make sure that the dog is being fed and watered and leave them with a warning. (By the way... a normal weight for a St. Bernard can be as little as 120 pounds.)

This is not a question of legal ramifications, but of what is best for an eighty pound St. Bernard in a neighborhood that floods everytime it rains and the water can contain numerous diseases. Schaffer, the known owner of Buddy, is a known alcoholic who can be gone for days even weeks at a time. Like I stated, this is not about legal ramifications, but whether or not it would be appropiate for us to take this incident to court and be given the dog.

And I'm not getting mad. But this is not about legal actions!! We were going to take him to court. Oh, but since you apparantly don't think before you act, you obviously didn't know that.
