Okay, so my family has a male chihuahua, or so we think, and we are having a hard time convincing people that he is NOT a mix. He is standard size (nine pounds when he's in shape). We were given him from a family friend who exclusivly breeds chihuahuas. Only problem is the guy isn't exactly a genius, and its probable that another breed got its genes in somewhere. His floppy ears and curly tail really make him look un-chihuahua but is it just bad genetics or a different breed? I've seen the mother and she definately looks 100% chi but I didn't get to see the father. We love him no matter what but my family would like to get some opinions on what exactly our boy is!
Here's some pics of him as a puppy and adult: Chihuahuapics
Uhm it's either a mix or RIDICULOUSLY outside of standards it looks mixed with some sort of terrier breed like JRT nothing about that dog says purebred chihuahua to me if it WAS i would cry at how horrid and irresponsible the breeders were.
Jack Russsel sounds accurate. Well I did say the guy we got him from wasnt the brightest... but he definately has some chihuahua in him. His siblings all looked chihuahua but were a bit different too. I'm starting to think he was just breeding bad genes... Anyway mixes are very good too! Since we didn't spend money on him expecting an AKC Chihuahua nothing's wrong with him being "outside" the standards.
oh don't get me wrong i'm not saying he's a bad dog i'm just saying he isn't a very good example of a chihuahua if he isn't mixed. i just find it sad a bit that people think that would be 100% chi as if they should look like that.
well vets have this new thing called doggy DNA. you have their DNA tested to see what breeds you mutt is. thats how we found out our mutt was a mix of Border Collie and Australian Shepard.
future vet those tests are not accurate and thus a waste of money unless you have it to throw around.
The proof of HOW random and not accurate the tests are was proven when a purebred champion american stafforsdhire terrier came back as a border collie mix.
