Ok I have three full grown labs. We have been putting their food in one bowl but one is bigger than the others and she pushes them out of the way until she has her fill. I have been seperating them, putting their bowls away from each other but when one walks away one will come up and eat her food...how do i stop this? also how much food should they get a day?
How much you feed your dogs all depends on the dogs. You need to take into account: age, energy level, size, brand of food.
Are the dogs walking away while there's still food in their bowls? That's the first thing you need to work on. Let them know they need to eat all their food now, or not at all.
Here's what you can try. Is there just the one dog stealing the food? Before my dogs eat they have to sit and wait for me to tell them when it's okay to eat. You can wait until the first two are half finished before giving her the okay. Another thing you can try is only giving her half her food. When she finishes that, give her a little bit more. Do this until the other dogs are done and all her food is gone. This will teach her that by staying by her food bowl she gets food. She'll also be too busy looking at you to watch the other dogs.
You need to feed your dogs seperately, and give them an amount of time to finish their food, and then take it away. They will learn very quickly to eat what is offered, when it is offered.
After they get in the habit of eating all their food out of their own dish you can try feeding them all together. Simply just sit in the room where they are eating, and when the large dog tries to steal food, discipline and separate that dog from the others.
How much food you should feed them depends on the quality of the food, the age and activity level of the dog, and how big they are, and their present body condition.
