I've recently discovered Greenies Pill Pockets which have made giving my dog her medication a million times easier! Rather than having to hide her pills inside a hotdog, a piece of cheese or even peanut butter, now I just slip the pill into the pocket, pinch it closed and then thats it! The pills are much healthier for dogs and she loves the taste! What more could you want?!
I've seen them before. They work, but they're really expensive. I just prefer to use peanut butter. It's cheaper, and my dogs just love it. But I guess it all depends on the dog.
Ya those little pockets sound fabulous! What I do is just wrap the pill a couple times in a piece of cheese. It's really just as simple, less expensive.
Greenies products are rather expensive. It's a brilliant marketing concept, however I give my dogs their pills in meat, peanut butter etc. and if they spit it out, I just jam it into the back of their throat so they have to swallow it.
-raises a brow- out of all the dogs i know it tends to be an automatic reaction- you old a dogs head up with their nose pointed towards the ceiling with something resting on their tongue and they sort of HAVE to swallow.
The very act of tilting your head upwards like that creates a strong urge to swallow even without something in your mouth.
So until I meet a dog that defies the laws of patience and physics i'll stick with my method
I think it's unnecessary to force a dog to swallow a pill when it can easily be taken in peanut butter or something. My dogs eat anything, so I can give them their pills in anything and they'll take it.
I also work at a boarding kennel. Some of the dogs there have got to get their meds. We try peanut butter or hiding it in canned food at first, but if that doesn't work...The only other option is to force it down their throats. It's not the ultimate definition of fun, but there's no harm in it at all.
