My dog Roxy barely eats ANYTHING. You han feel every bone in her body, especially her ribs. I try to feed her twice a day, but she just leaves it alone. I lead her to the food, and show it to her, but she just doesn't eat. When I do get her to eat, she just picks through the kibble looking for the Alpo chunks. If she was human, she'd look anorexic! Please help!!!
this happened to my dog when we got rid of her sister she stoped eating and started to eat the cat food then she ate soft dog food and then we mixed soft and hard food together and then we got a puppy from the next door naboighor and she started eating again maybe you should adopt a dog from the shelter so give it a try ok
It doesn't sound like she is lonely. What food are you feeding her? It could just taste bad. Also, alpo is a bad canned dog food, you may want to change that. Some dogs don't even need canned dog food, just put some warm water in their food. But I suggest you change food, change canned food, and if you mix them in together, mix it really good.
But more information would help. Is this a rescue dog? A new dog? If she just suddenly stopped eating, that's a health problem and you need to see the vet. Either way, if she's that skinny you need to see the vet.
ok, first thing you should try. Is definately the mixing of the soft and dry foods, if that doesnt work if you take the wet food, and stir fry with strong smelling things, suchg as onions or garlic, that will strongly attract your dog. If that doesnt work try feeding your dog warm water, chicken and rice, tis fatening, and actually healthy for your dog. Its what we feed my parents dog when she sis sick.
First of all, Alpo is that bad? I either use that or generic.Second of all, as a puppy, Roxy didn't like her puppy chow and tried to take some from adult dog food from our other dog, Bubby, so i don't think it's the food. Well, maybe. Oh I don't know. And as for history, we got her from a family friend who live near the woods in the country. Could that be the problem? she had severe worms when we first got her but we cleared that up. She may have worms again but were not sure. I haven't seen any in her stool. Another concern is that she has vomiting spasms. When i say spasms I mean she looks like a cat coughing up a hairball, but instead.... uh you get the picture. It's not usually just plain bile, though it sometimes is. I think I'll try a more varied diet. Perhaps some carrots or an occasional drizzle of broth. After that, she it certainly going to the vet.
I hope your dog has received vet care by now, but I felt I had to respond. My dog did this about a year ago and it turned out that she had a growth in her mouth that was making it too painful for her to eat. Have your vet examine your dog's mouth closely; sometimes a mouth problem or a bad tooth can make eating painful, so they avoid it. Hope this helps.
AAAARRRRRGG!!!!!! Help!! My parents are trying different foods, different bowls, everything execpt taking her to the vet. I'm trying fattier meals and lots of treats, but there's hardly any change. I want to take her to the vet, but it's not like I can afford it. What should I do?!?!? I repeat, I'm only 12!! GRAH!!!
It's hard to tell you exactly what to do. I've always had a big mouth where my parents are concerned, especially when it comes to my dogs, and I would fight them tooth and claw.
I always start with yelling. Maybe you should start differently. Tell them the facts. The food isn't working. The bowl should make no difference, your dog needs a vet. Why won't they take the dog to the vet? Because of money? The longer you wait, the more money you will have to pay to fix the problem, or the dog could even die.
Call and talk to a vet yourself and tell your parents what the vet says. Your dog has a medical problem and changing food will make little to no difference. Or, get someone else to talk to your parents. Do you have a family member that can convince them?
My German Shepherd doesn't always eat sometimes because of heart worms. There are special pills you get from the vet that you give the dog and it gets rid of heart worms. Having heart worms can sometimes take away the dogs appetite. Well I hope your dog starts eating again soon. Really soon
Heartworm pills do NOT take away heartworms. They prevent them. If your dog has heartworms, you have to go through an incredibly invasive procedure that pretty much poisons your dog to get rid of them.
If you give a dog heartworm pills that has heartworms, it could kill them. That is why they have heartworm test before you get the pills.
When I said worms, I didn't imply heartworms, so please no more bickering about that. Also, even though I'm trying to convince my parents, they still aren't opening there eyes. Really, mom works at a doctors office!! I think I'll have to go from nudge to push. Perhaps I should show her this forum.
actually canterbury some medications do what we call the slow kill method. The active ingredient in Heartguard will kill adult worms slowly and is what is called the poor man heartworm treatment.
This is what the vet had my friend do with an adopted bard dog who had severe heartworms.
It's still extremely dangerous. (The other method is still so... but to go and buy heartworm medication without a test is a bit loony.)
I'm also iffy about many heartworm medications, as some of them have warnings and have been known to react poorly with dogs who have a lot of white on them.
Revolution is my heartworm med of choice. Pretty safe, all around... and kills fleas, too.
Dogs dont eat with there mouths, they eat with there nose. (metaphoricly speaking) They will eat anything if it smells good to them. So try sprinkling some garlic powder or another spice that has a strong smell. But dont put something too spicey because they can have diarrieah if their stomach does not agree with it.
