"Pet food maker announces major recall By ANDREW BRIDGES, Associated Press Writer
38 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6. The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods did not immediately provide a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall, saying they would be posted on its Web site — http://www.menufoods.com/recall — early Saturday. Consumers with questions can call (800) 551-7392.

The company said it manufacturers for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for the top branded pet food companies. Its three U.S. and one Canadian factory produce more than 1 billion containers of wet pet food a year. The recall covers pet food made at company plants in Emporia, Kan., and Pennsauken, N.J., Henderson said.

Henderson said the company received an undisclosed number of owner complaints of vomiting and kidney failure in dogs and cats after they had been fed its products. It has tested its products but not found a cause for the sickness.

"To date, the tests have not indicated any problems with the product," Henderson said.

The company alerted the Food and Drug Administration, which already has inspectors in one of the two plants, Henderson said. The FDA was working to nail down brand names covered by the recall, agency spokesman Mike Herndon said.

Menu Foods is majority owned by the Menu Foods Income Fund, based in Ontario, Canada."

Brands that are being recalled will be announced on Saturday

Well, I'm not surprised.

That's sad though. All those animals and owners who had to suffer because of sub-par dog food.

I find it interesting that you left out the fact that this recall included Iams and Eukanuba .

P&G announced Friday the recall of specific 3 oz., 5.5 oz., 6 oz. and 13.2 oz. canned and 3 oz. and 5.3 oz. foil pouch cat and dog wet food products made by Menu Foods but sold under the Iams and Eukanuba brands. The recalled products bear the code dates of 6339 through 7073 followed by the plant code 4197, P&G said.

I wonder how those who argue that the store brands are inferior to these specialty brands explain that they somehow come from the same plant, and suffer contamination from the same chemical???

I think Eukanuba and Iams are sub par. My boyfriends mom just dropped her senior lab off at our house while she's on vacation.

The lab is obese, smells awful, has extreme dandruff, and poops big smelly sponge like piles.

What is she eating? Iam's Senior.

Lamb meal, grain, corn, grain, chicken by product.

No good.

I used to think Nutro was good, but after reviewing it against other foods I've found it's medium at best and have now switched to Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul.

It's the same price and contians 4 whole protiens in the first 5 ingredients, has no by products and no corn in it. It's also full of all sorts of other good ingredients.

It's so good a human could eat it.

AH, well that clears it up.

I saw on the news today that Hills Science Diet had been added to the list since they too use the same manufacturer.

While the manufacturer Menu Foods says that they believe that it is probably related to a new supplier of Wheat Gluten meal; the symptoms really make me wonder if they include Propylene glycol , an "artificial flavor" used in many soft drinks and snack foods to heighten sweetness (And add that flavor Dr Pepper was famous for). If it were contaminated with Ethylene Glycol (antifreeze) or they got the wrong product this would yield the symptoms exhibited. When metabolized Ethylene Glycol forms Calcium Oxylate crystals in the kidneys and cause kidney failure . As little as 30mL (one third of a CC) can be fatal, exposure is cumulative . Normal LD50 is 1.4mL/Kg so it would not take much to be fatal.

PRECAUTIONARY INFORMATION:

There is something really important that I wanted to suggest to anyone who has pet food that has been recalled.

Keep ALL cans of affected food (completely separate from good food) until we know what exactly is going on.

Apparently pet food stores are exchanging contaminated food or giving refunds.

Your Vet may need a sample of the "bad" food to diagnose any problems your pet may have.

We are also going to need proof of what is happening to seek retribution.

These are just suggestions... I am only looking out for the best interest of the animals. I have 2 cats that have eaten the sophisticat brand and they seem fine right now. I am closely monitoring them and watching for the warning signs.

This recall is very scary because they are not releasing any information about what is in the food.

I hope that everyone's pets are happy and healthy and I wish everyone luck with this horrific situation.

Im not familiar with all the brands on the list but the ones I am familiar with I know are just horrible brands. Maybe this recall will open peoples eyes to what is in their dogs food.

Plus I have been noticing that in my area dog food prices on "cheap" brands are going up so why not pay the same price or a little more to give your dog a quality food

So; Authority , Eukanuba, IAMS, Nutro, Nutro Natural all now qualify as "horrible brands" and "Sub par" in some folks minds? Or do they get special exemption ?
Also , I saw on the news today that 70% of the deaths were in their product testing program.
Yes, you could make your own dog food, but how many of us are dietitians and veterinarians qualified to ensure that we are making a balanced and complete feed? How sure can we be of the quality of the products we include?
Look at the recent recalls of spinach and lettuce; we all rely on producers to provide us with quality products and to test them and alert us immediately when a problem occurs. This was not intentional; the only question is should they have know and notified people sooner and has adequate action been taken to ensure that this does not affect the human food supply and that it will not happen again.

What I find really funny is that after it is revealed that these so called sub par foods and the fancy vet recommended premium food are in fact made from the same ingredients in the same factory on what is probably the same production line ; people still post about how you should be buying premium brands to be safe.

I long ago learned that often you can tell where a store gets its store brand products (milk, bread etc) from by comparing the ingredient list and nutrition information and then checking the pattern of the stamp used to identify the production facility and expiration date.
It is highly unlikely that two completely unrelated foods would have the same ingredients, in the same order and comprising the same nutritional values ; but when you add on that they use the same stamp (location is key here , it is easy to change numbers and stamps but moving the machine which puts them on a package to get a different location is more difficult) it is very probable they are both made by the same plant on the same line.

It is very interesting that they are blaming the Wheat Gluten Meal. Since this is used in many Human foods; I wonder how long until a recall of things like TV dinners and other processed foods containing wheat gluten is mandated by the FDA?

I'm seriously thinking about changing Katie's food AGAIN to something better..what would you all recommend?? Right now I'm using Purina One and I'm not sure it's the best type of food cause it has that Wheat Gluten in it.
