i dont think it has much to do with the breed of the dog. i think it is the dog and the dogs traing. some dogs are easier to train than others but that doesnt mean they are any smarter. it is true that some breeds are more independent than others which can make them harder to train but that doesnt mean that they arent as smart.

yea i think that list is dumb cuz you cant say from 1 or even a couple dogs since they all have diffrent personalities and can be more stubborn then another breed but like you bully breeds seem to be more inteligent to me out of all the breeds ive messed with

What they don't take into consideration is mixed breeds. Their is no science to testing dog intelligence. On any day, any dog, any method, any breed could vary greatly.

Even IQ for humans aren't a very valid and widely recognized indicator of intelligence.

Is there a even a widely recognized dog intelligence test? A over the top smart dog to me is one that can survive on it's own, and do outrageously fantastic tricks and the what not.

FAIRNESS
Yep, testing and intelligence ratings are unreliable and unfair. Medical schools need to change their policies. Everyone interested in becoming a doctor writes their name on a piece of paper. All the papers are placed in a hat. Random names are then drawn from the hat. These folks get to become doctors. Airlines can also recruit pilots the same way. It ain't fair that some folks have the intelligence and skills to control a large metal object at 35,000 feet and others don't.

Yes, lets make everything fair and equal for everyone and everything. After all, we know how fair mother nature is. Wink

Their testing method in the above listed article is non-inclusive. But we discussed all this in the Least Intelligent Dog thread a bit ago... which miraculously, also managed to use the same scientifically faulty benchmark.

Honestly consider something folks I own both a border collie and shetland sheepdog <let's see #1 and #6 on the list> and a brittany <which ranks at #19> According to these results I should be advocating this testing method because it says my crew is among the most intelligent, instead I'm calling it bunk due to incomplete testing!

My father always told me, "life isn't fair".

Life's lessons are great.

Why has dog intelligence such an issue anyway? Until dogs are able to get jobs and an income at my house, I don't care how smart they are, as long as they piddle outside and make good snuggle buddies.

PCIK A BREED, ANY BREED
Some dog breeds are generally smarter then others. My favorite breeds rank in the middle of the smart rankings. I don't care. In fact, some of the breeds in the top ten are ones that I don't like. Again, I don't care.

If all dog breeds were indeed equal, then sheep farmers could pick any dog to help them. I'm sorry, but I can't picture the average bulldog herding sheep. I can't picture the average the Afghan sitting in a duck blind waiting to assist his owner. I can't picture the average Beagle assisting a wheel chair bound person with daily tasks.

ANGEELEETA
The reason this is such a hot topic is that dogs are involved. If someone's favorite dog is not on top of the list they take it personally. This is just too emotional for some folks to seperate facts from feelings. Look at the thread about putting clothes on dogs. That is making dogs into something they are not. Is it any wonder then that some dog peple can't face reality.

Besides, have you ever seen Border Collie fans post their indignation about dog intelligence rankings? Big Grin

All I can say is that I'm happy papillons are #8 on the list! Big Grin
They may not look that smart, but there are some that herd sheep, help disabled people, track missing people, obviously compete in agility, excel in obedience and many others.
haha, it's hard to picture a pap herding sheep!

Your breed ranks higher then my breed. I don't care. In fact I congratulate you on liking such an intelligent breed. But weather my favorite dogs rank number one or number 100, it doesn't matter to me. I accept reality.

I do think people take it too personally too Lizzie.

Although the Pap I have would soooo not be in #8. More like last...lol. He's a sweetie, but all looks and no brain...lol. Or he's smart enough to know he's so cute he didn't have to learn anything.

But certain breeds do have their characteristics and I think that has something to do with it along with the training. It is kind of hard to determin the intelligence of dogs I think. They all have what they're good at by what they were bred for, so how is one actually more intelligent than the other?

You're right, too many people take it too personally. I feel this away about it, my pets, my business. As long as they're well cared for and loved, who cares?

Some dogs were bred for purpose, Labs, Border Collies, etc. fulfill human needs, and yes, they are smart dogs who do their bred for jobs well. However, not many people get their dogs for their intended purpose. Cuddle buddies! That's what dogs are to me. I respect the few that still are a working breed, but the working breeds are not for me.

I have dogs for pets. That's it. I don't claim my pets to uber intelligent, and I really don't care if they are considered stupid by test standards. They give me companionship which is all their are with me for. In my book, they fulfill that job 100%.

I dress my dogs though, and I have no trouble facing reality, or not taking a breed dislike personally. Just because a person puts a sweater on a dog doesn't make them monster, humanizing, bad owner, no dogs for you ever, person. It seems like people who care for dogs would have more productive things, more often, to pull together for then t-shirts on Fluffy and their genius level Border Collie.

Then you ignored my previous post, Lizzie. I do NOT feel the method of testing is appropriate and I own a Border Collie <#1 on the list>, a Shetland Sheepdog <#6>, and Brittany <#19>. By your logic my emotions should be stirring in me to defend my breeds status. Think about it. The testing method IS NOT complete enough from a scientific point of view to be accurate, cut and dried, no emotions involved.

RULES, NOT EXCEPTIONS
Science is based on rules and patterns. Yes, there are exceptions to any rule. But that does not make for good science.

My sister is a nurse in a major hospital. A recent patient was a 95 year old lady. She was a cigarette smoker and had been one since she was a teenager. We can not conclude from this person that smoking is harmless. Science tells us that if you smoke, your health will be jeopardized and living to 95, or even 65 would be wishful thinking.

There are border collies that are dense. There are bulldogs that are brilliant. But those are the exceptions.

A couple that I know live for their bulldogs. They love the breed and speak highly of them. They also admit that their dogs are not the sharpest around. They jokingly say that they could leave home in the morning and by the time they return in the evening their dogs have just figured out they were left home alone.

I refuse to believe that all dogs are equally smart. It might not be fair but, tough luck! Wink
