Warning: I'm going to rant here. I'm getting so frustrated lately with some of the posts on the board. Between this recent one and the shock collar debate, I'm wondering how any dog grows up decent in this country?!? Sometimes, you just start feeling like no one's making a dent in educating folks. I'm so tired of people treating dogs like they're money making machines or they're cars without feelings. You breed 'em and you shock 'em and somehow look at yourself in the mirror in the morning. It just gets so frustrating. It never seems to end. What ARE people thinking...
Just venting. Good thing I'm off to a dog show this weekend. I'll be around people who know how to treat their dogs. It should lift my spirits a bit...
I agree with all.. S&N your dogs and leave the breeding to responsible breeders. It has a very nice ring to it, but we know it is far from happening. But we cannot stop preaching about it. Education is clearly the key.
When people stop putting $$ on dogs (all pets) and breed them for only the true benefit of the breed, then maybe there will be less space taken up in the shelters.
how ignorant people are about basic ways to raise a dog is beyond me. I have only had two dogs in my life yet I have never once had the questions some people here do.
*Stop breeding dogs yourself *Spueter your dogs *If your dog is constantly throwing up, in pain or anything else that is not of normal behavior in terms of bodily functions take them to the vet! *Please dont ask about the best food for your dog- look it up first ...there are probably more but my brain blanked in anger
angeeleeta brought up another very valuable and important point. Not only should you S or N your dog, but VACCINATE! A healthy dog is a happy dog. Take your pet to the vet at least once a year. Keep it up to date on it's shots and give heartworm medicine monthly. There is nothing more costly than a sick dog (and this refers to both money and time.)
If you find it cheaper on the internet, many vets will adjust the cost of their medicines on hand, if you print off a copy of the flyer and bring it to the office...mine does.
If everyone would do these things (food, water and exercise included), I think we would have a good grasp on improving the quality and quantity of pets.
Okay now it's my turn for a rant. Tonight I got a call about a senior GSP desperatly in need of a home.
The poor old dog has an inoperable malignancy and behavior problems the owners can't cope with so they dumped him in a shelter.
I don't know what I'm angriest about; the fact that the owners dumped him after a lifetime of companionship or the fact that I'm no longer able to cope with a dog with severe behavioral problems.
How in the world can anyone have a dog for years and then dump it with the comment "He will be so much better off in another home".
Can they really be ignorant enough to believe that perfect doggie retirement homes are lined up begging to take old, sick, uncontrollable dogs off their hands?
oh vaccinations....so right There are usually clinics nearby that offer low cost vaccinations.
Also everybody needs to know where a vet or animal hospital is nearby that is either open 24 hours and/or open on Sundays. thank god I knew where one was nearby me when Jeffrey had a bacterial infection that popped up out of NOWHERE.
Some people really shouldnt take obidence training into their own hands either. I seriously think that if you cant even afford to pay for an obidence class then dont get the dog.
oh yeah Im tired of people who always ask well what breed should I get? Specially when they do not want to look into their own lifestyle and research breeds. And then what really gets me is when people say well get this breed because I have one and they are awesome

I'm getting sick of "what breed should I get" simply because the very website you go to to access this forum has a LINK to a dog breed selector that asks the key questions you need to consider when getting a poochie.
PAY ATTENTION TO THIS WEBSITE!!! How hard is that?

Also toys and treats that are doggie safe!
I have an issue with out of country rawhides and greenies.
I figured the feeding part was a given (silly me.. ) But you are right, it does need to be addressed with some people. And thanks for adding socialization, which is very important in having a well-rounded dog.
All your additions are definitely things that need to be taken into consideration.

This is really sad. You would be surprised at how ignorant people really are (on second thought, I think you know.) So much for responsibility. What did they mean by behavior problems?

I don't know why people treat dogs like a sofa. When it's old, you throw it out for a new one. I wish I could give those people a piece of my mind!! It just so very sad.
I think the thing that gets me the most is when someone post about a medical problem that should really be taken up with their vet. For example, "my dog is limping", "my cat throws up everyday". Or opinions stated as facts, "sight hounds are really good with cats because my grey hound never chased anything", "I want my dog to experience having puppies because it will improve her temperment".
I applaude everyone who keeps their temper (mostly) in check with these types of posts. I don't answer most of them because of that reason.

I enjoy these types of posts as long as the person is serious. At least they're trying to be responsible, you know? What bugs me is when they say that one of their parents don't want a dog or they just want to know what breeds go well with their current breed but mention nothing else on what they want in a dog.
And of course I agree, spay and neuter your pets! And if they do go into heat, keep an eye on them at all times! This means walking them on a leash just to go in your backyard. If you have multiple intact dogs, keep them away from eachother! I've heard of dogs breeding through a cage door! So when they are put in cages, double the cages up and put them in seperate rooms. If you have kids be sure to go over the rules too or else they'll want to let the dogs play with each other. Be responsible for once people!
