Animal lovers, unite! Using undercover cameras, Lisa Ling investigates the hidden world of puppy mills. Why it's important to know where your puppy really comes from before you take it home! See the startling treatment of animals in our country and what you can do about it. If you are a pet lover, or just someone who supports basic humane treatment of animals, you truly have to see this for yourself!

Anyone else planning to watch this? I think it's about high time Oprah did a show about puppy mills. Since she such a respected source among average American households, people might finally realize this is a serious and devastating problem.

Great!
Do you know what time it is? I don't usually watch Oprah, but I will be this Friday. And just in time for puppy season. I've seen so many people with puppies already, it takes all my willpower not to stop them on the street and ask them where they got the puppy from.

i dont watch oprah either, mostly because she hates men, but I'll watch this hopefully because of her brainwashing of women animal cruelty and the shut down of puppy mills will happen

NO guys seriously she is such a hypocrite! DO NOT support or watch her show. She will be promoting PeTA and HSUS. Her golden chocked on a ball and died and she said she didn't think it was an accident (because of course why would she want to take responsibility)

She loves her dogs so much, so what does she ever exactly do with them? She has people hired to walk them play with them and basically do everything she should be doing with them.

I am pretty sure this whole thing will somehow ebb into how no one should be breeding because there are so many dogs blah blah. We are all terrible people.

Sorry I'm not a fan of opera she has all this 'power' but seems to believe the dumbest people aka peta and the hsus

talltail: It depends on what time zone you are in I think, for me it's on at 5 pm.

badkittyamy: I don't think she'll promote PETA, but it might come up. I think that her showing it on her show is a step in the right direction. The reality of it is that not enough people know that puppy mills even exist, or the horrors of them, so this will really educate a lot of people.

Oprah does show on obesity, exercise, mental disorders, etc. and you don't see the whole world conforming to her beliefs on these. She's just a source of information that many people tune into. Just because she says it, doesn't mean they all do it.

Not to mention Lisa Ling is doing the investigation, Oprah is airing it and doing the commentary.

Her goldens came from a very non ethical breeder and from a report I saw on the number of dogs there verged very closely on being a puppy mill itself which is why I think her report is hypocritical.

I wish I could find the blog now searching on blogger for oprah golden retrievers just brings up the fact that one of the dogs died.

"While Sophie was not a product of a puppy mill, and Winfrey’s three current dogs were adopted from breeders, Winfrey says in the future she would look to adopt from an animal shelter."

How does one "Adopt" from a breeder? Everything she does is worded so people are mislead. it always says the golden were 'adopted'. She BOUGHT or was given them by a breeder that is NOT adoption.

PeTA also speaks a lot of truth about puppy mills i still do not endorse them or their material in any way, I feel the same way about oprah. Yes she is a large venue that gets a message out but she is not one i feel is where i would want anyone getting information from.

It is too overly sensational like a bad soap opera.

My dog Malikye came from an unethical breeder byb, and Sisqo came from a byb.

People aren't born educated, they learn. A few years ago, I didn't know about byb or puppy mills. She might not have known either, and now may be trying to educate where she made a mistake.

Adopt is one of the words that can have too many uses, just like your favorite word, hybrid. It's context can be true, but the use of it is misleading.

People are able to decide what is good information for them, and weed out what they want to, and do not want to believe or put faith in.

I think she's taking a step in the right direction, and no matter what, puppy mills are bad, and that's the end of the story.

I'm going to watch it and see what she says anyway. I'm hoping she won't support PETA. But hundreds of people do listen to her. Even if I don't agree with everything she says, I do agree with her on the subject of puppy mills.

I guess the best thing to do is wait and see what she says.

Just out of curiosity, badkittyamy, why don't you like HSUS? I took a look at their website and I saw nothing wrong with them. Or is there something else they do that is not common knowledge?

HSUS is the same thing as Peta as they are an animal rights group. They do not support bully breeds and they have not a single shelter and are not associated with any either. They spend all the money on hyping themselves rather than putting it into helping animals.

HSUS is also largely against ALL breeding and also is against reptiles as pets. While not seemingly as radical as PeTA they often trick people into donations with simply their name. I mean how many people read Humane Society of the United States and doesn't think it's associated with the shelters of America?

So the support BSL especially against those "evil evil" pitbulls
They are against all breeding ethical or no
They are an animal rights group
They use subversive tactics to illicit donations
They are against reptile ownership
The push veganism good meat eating evil

Thanks!
That is very interesting. Like everyone else, I assumed it has something to do with humane societies. Apparently, they're just more misleading then PETA but still has a lot of the same tactics and ideas. I'll have to do some more research into that now.

its so sad how corrupt and mis-shaped peoples views are. I grew up with nothing, still dont have anything but occasionally i do. people are never satisfied if your making $1million a year and you're buggin bout not having enough I'd knock you out. but for the most part america is gullible they have us brainwashed through media and misused names. I understand the government needs to keep something on the DL but not everything and same goes for these groups

I watched, and I LOVED it!

I think they did an amazing job portraying all aspects of mills and what they cause. They advocated shelter dogs, spay/neuter, and responsible breeders.

Not once was PETA mentioned, as I thought it would be. Oprah is a good reporter.

She also admited the wrong in her ways of buying from breeders and promised that from now on she'd be a shelter only gal. Smile

Truly responsible breeders are few and far in between though. I personally think that adoption is the way to go. People want pets, and any dog can make a pet.

Unless you're looking for something so specific and have a legitmate need for a working type dog, there is absolutly no reason to go to a breeder vs. shelter.

I watched it!
Yeah, she did a great job. It really made me want to go to an animal shelter and adopt all the ones with medical problems.

But no mention of PETA and even the AKC was included. Although I wish everyone would stop talking about the pregnant man and start talking about ways to stop puppy mills.

I have nothing against responsible breeders. But there are so few of them. I'll always adopt and I'll always encourage other people to adopt. Although my boss may give me one of her dogs when it retires(she shows English mastiffs).

I thought one of the best parts of the show was at the shelter when they talked about how they made the decision as to which dogs would be euthnaized. Those were some beautiful dogs. I hope people saw that there are some nice looking and seemingly well-behaved dogs in the shelter. I'm afraid people think that shelter dogs are all dirty, matted, mean dogs with missing teeth. Overall- great show!

I have to say that was the hardest part. All those dogs getting put down did nothing wrong. But there was just no choice.

Oprah's show was great I thought.
My mother and I bought our Golden planning to show her. She was from a responsible breeder, she represents the breed well and has good bloodlines. The breeder had 2 interviews with the people who were interested in the puppies and we got to see the mom and the father and the whole litter of puppies.
They had a spay and neuter contract but we decided we might breed her if when she gets older she is a good representative of the breed and has all health clearances etc. Although after watching that show, I think i've changed my mind. I want to get her spayed and I talked to my mom and she said we could adopt a dog or 2 from a shelter. And just thinking of adopting a dog I already feel like a much better person.

Dang! I can't believe I missed it! Anyone know when it'll be on again? Though Oprah is a complete hippocriate (anyone else think she just gets paid to chat for an hour?) I would still like to see what really goes on in the mills.
