O.k., I got the chicken (measured and bagged in simgle portions), eggs, veggies, livers, and yogurt. I'm switching my dogs tomorrow. I know to start with chicken only. My question is when I start adding the other stuff in.
Is the organ meat calculated in with the total meat poundage, or in addition to it? Like my 10 lb. dog gets 2 oz. per meal, would the liver be included with the 2 oz., or in addition to? I know the veggie egg mix is like an extra, but not sure about the organ meat.
I would assume you would count those organ calories in with the daily allowance. I feed my dogs the raw diet, but I buy my raw food from a butcher that grinds up the meat with the bones and packages it. So I'm assuming the organs, which are processed in this method, are part of the daily caloric intake. So I think you should count the organs as part of the meal, and add your veggies. You will be amazed at the difference in the total health of your dog after awhile. Oh, and I incorporate the yogurt by mixing it with blueberries and sliced hot dogs, then pour it into empty marrow bones. Then I freeze them. The dogs just love taking their time working on them. It's a great treat if I have to go out for awhile, and keeps them busy. Congratulations on your decision to go raw!
Organ meat has little in calories. Your dog is fed 2 percent body a day- ie 1 percent twice a day- then add the organ meat. Its much simplier and works just as well. There is another thread and I will bump it up for you.
I fed them their first raw chicken this morning. The poor dogs looked at me like I was trying to poison them. I wound up having to cut it up and hand feed them. The younger dog ate with coaxing, but the older wouldn't touch it except to crunch up a couple of bones. I decided to skip dinner tonight and try again tomorrow when they're really hungry.
Day three, and they're much more enthusiastic about their strange new dinners! The only problem now is the cats want in on it too. I guess I'll switch them over as well, such angry glances I got from them tonight. Tonight I mixed up the egg, shell and all, chicken livers, and small amount of sweet potato. That went down well.
The little dog already shows much improvement in the itchy category. I was scratching her back today, and for the first time in five years, she didn't go crazy licking the air and thumping her leg. Hopefully I will soon see the same results in the larger dog, who has been suffering greatly from itchiness this spring.
Again, thanks for all the help. Will keep ya'll posted.
Oh its amazing- and you wonder why some vets do not want you to feed this.. lolllllllllll.. As my vet jokes ( 5 of the 7 feed raw) "except for shots, I never get to see your beautiful dogs.." lollllllllll...
borzoimom, do you just chop the meat up in chunks, or do you grind it up? I'm thinking the food processor wouldn't handle the bone. I owned an electric meat grinder and I broke it trying to grind the chicken legs. I buy my raw already ground up with the bones now. Just wondering if you grind it or serve in chunks after cutting with a clever. Thanks!
The change in Merry, little dog, is amazing. Although she always did have amazing digestive powers. Nobody has vomited, or even got the runs, like I expected them to. Their output is minimal already. I guess since one got better so quickly, I being a little impatient for the other one to improve, common sense tells me a couple of weeks, but she seems a little bit better.
Peoplepacks, I just kind of carve the meat off the bone in chunks, and throw the bone in whole. Dogs love to chew bones right? My little one, about 10 lbs, has no problem at all crunching up the wing bones.
Thanks texgirl, I was asking because my sister wants to start her dog on the raw food diet, but he's 10 years old, and I'm leary of suggestion it without the bones ground in with the meat. He's not used to eating any bones, and his teeth and gums may not be up to the job. She's not near the guy I buy from who grinds for raw diets, so I was wondering if any of you guys found a machine strong enough to do it. Thanks!
