Do you mean spaying?

If thats the case, then no, spaying a female dog will not change her personality.

Now if you are talking about nuetering...then sometimes. If they are nutered early they sometimes think that they are not nuetered.Smile They are all awesome no matter what!!! Smile

Actually in neutering older male dogs, I wouldn't really even call that a personality change. It's not personality that you are altering (lol pun intended), it's just hormone driven instinct. Wandering and aggression isn't part of any dogs personality.

Yeah...this is true! I think they would still do some things like mark their territory...right because my dog does that. Smile It doesn't really matter to me as long as you love your dog. Smile But i would nueter or spay to make sure that the overpopulation crisis doesn't get out of hand. Big Grin

The only difference I have seen spaying a female verses one that isnt is one thing. A female that is spay, is obviously not going to go through the moodiness a female that is not. A female coming into season prior to peak,is rather sno*tty towards other females or males, and after the peak - same thing- This of course lasts a good 6 weeks total. Two weeks prior to heat, the heat and the week afterwards. In the breeds were they would come into heat every 6 months that means every 4 months- you get to go through it AGAIN..
To me there is no reason to keep a female from spaying unless a show dog being shown.

No, you can't spay a show dog. The purpose of conformation shows is to choose which dogs are worthy of being bred.

Spaying hasn't changed either of my girls' personalities. And life is a lot better with Carley being spayed. No matter what time of year it is, I can take her anywhere. When she was intact, I couldn't take classes during that time or any time close to when she would be going into heat. If she had a false pregnancy that made it even longer. Having an intact female is NOT fun.

I don't think it changes their personality.

My 6 year old Pom was recently neutered, and it didn't change him one bit.

My dogs are both neutered/spayed. I would have liked to show my corgi but he has been neutered and he has a serious fault of white marks. He is now my Agility dog! Smile

Spaying a female dog does not change the dogs personality but it sure changes the temperament of the owner. Wink

No more putting up with the mess twice a year, struggling to keep her safely confined for 3 weeks or worries about the possibiliy of unwanted pregnancies or life threatening pyometria.

Having a female pet spayed is one of the kindest act we can do for them. It's also the simplest and cheapest path to peace of mind for the caring owner of a beloved pet.

When your dog gets spayed, it may be calm and quiet for the next few days after the surgery, which is a good thing so that stitches don't fall out, but after the drugs and fear fades away, the dogs personality should be in normal stages. If not, your dog may just be shooken up from the vets.

It is spaying, not spading. Sorry for the misunderstanding. And no, I have never known an animal's personaility to change, unless they were constantly flirting and trying to mate.

Yeah, I went through one heat cycle with Rosie, it was her first.

It was seriously a pain and I wouldn't want to deal with it twice a year even if she was show quality! lol

She wasn't moody or grouchy with my other females (I have a house of 3 girls), but she was super hyper and bouncy. Although it can still be a task to get her to focus, she is alot better than she was before I got her spayed.

Then there was the discharge that got ALL OVER my sheets because she sleeps on the bed.

When she did get spayed, she was NOT quiet at all. The vet sent her home with 4 days worth of tranquilizer pills. Although I was able to extend it because instead of using 4 a day, I only used 2. She didn't need them at night because she was in bed asleep!

When we got Kassie she was already spayed. We got Jeffrey fixed when he was almost a year old. There was absolutely no change what so ever in his personality. He didnt even notice they were gone.

Believe me getting your dogs fixed is totally worth any "personality" changes your dog may have

Not fixing your dog is going to bring you a whole bunch of problems.

If your dog is male he will be more than likely wanting to break out of his yard or house in order to find the females in heat

If you have a female going into heat is not a fun thing. You have to keep a constant eye on her in order to keep her from becoming impregnated. Also you have to deal with the female mess.

If you are worried about changes in personality from fixing your dog then you need to be more worried about personality changes when your dog either goes into heat or starts searching for a mate.

Plus there is always the possibility of your female becoming pregnant and the finical responsibility of this.

With soooooooooooo many dogs in shelters please do not contribute to this by not fixing your dog just because you do not like the idea of it. The benefits of fixing your dog heavily outweigh whatever reasoning you have behind not. Please fix your dog for the health and well being of your dog- believe your dog will not even realize that anything has changed at all after being fixed. I went through it with both a male and a female. My male never ever even noticed his bits were missing- he didnt even try to lick his stitches

PLEASE get your girl spayed. Have you ever had a dog go into heat? It's defiantly NOT fun. Female dogs have their name for a reason.
You'll meet random dogs that you never even knew lived near you. You have to keep a constant eye on her. For three weeks everytime she goes outside you have to walk her. She'll make a mess. She'll cry, flag and hump. She may have a false pregnancy. She may develop a deadly problem that could have been prevented. And then, you'll really regret not having her spayed.

So you would risk your dogs health because of money?

Believe me you would be surprised with how quickly dogs become pregnant even when you feel you are ALWAYS watching them
