I just started my dogs on a raw diet earlier this week, and now one of them has really strange looking poop. The best way to describe it is that it looks like it is covered in/mixed with a white/green mucous. Is this normal, or do I need to take the dog to the vet? I'm not entirely sure which dog it is, and none of them are acting any different than normal.
I think it's normal. My dogs sometimes have that mucous stuff, too, since starting the raw diet, although it’s usually clear or slightly whitish. I’m not sure if green is OK.
You'll have to wait till one of the raw feeders is on but I think this would be a part of the system flushing out all of the enzymes and crud it doesn't need any more when it had to digest kibble.
Its called detoxifacation .. Its flushing the liver into the bowel changing the colors. That means what you were feeding had alot of color additives, sodium selinate etc... It can happen especially if you were feeding a poor diet before... Just like you- if you eat pizza etc then eat a balenced diet- you could end up with uh strange po*op.. Green muscus is what shows up as the liver detoxes and chemicals are released. It is ridding the body of toxins, and stored fat in the bowel..
Oh good, I'm so glad it's nothing that I should worry about. It does make me wonder how bad my food was before though. I can't wait til my food processor gets here though (it was cheaper to get it online), so I don't have to mess with cutting up the chicken every time. Plus they aren't big on the carrots, and it'll be easier when I can get everything mixed up together. And it's hilarious watching the little dogs trying to eat the chicken bones, but they tend to fight over them, so hopefully that will stop soon.
Oh, btw, one of the puppies is going to it's new forever home next week! I knew he would be the first to be picked, he is an adorable little guy. He'll have to learn spanish though...lol.
I feed my dogs seperatly- even in seperate rooms. They do love the raw, and I do not want them to even think for a second they need to defend their great dinners.. lol.. Also- green muscus could be retained iron as well. What happens with the vitamin mix in dog foods is that the extrusion heat process kills the b and water soluable vitamins. Remember- the listing of vitamis is PRIOR to processing- not after.. Then the vitamins become all but imbalenced. I only had one that had this green muscus stool. That was femka as she had eaten kibble her first 5 years of life.. It stopped in 48 hours or less. You can add a little raw oatmeal. This will stabilze the acid in the digestion tract while the dog goes through this process. Its the old fashion kind- raw- right out of the cardboard container at one teaspoon per 10 pounds of dog body weight ( or one tablespoon per 30 pounds of body weight) give twice a day at both feedings. You wont need this long but it does help alot!
Try www.petsage.com, even though they are based outta Alexandria,Virginia. They do have a online shop where you can find dog food and purchase it through them. I might actually do that since our dog food that we currently use,IAMS, is about done I need to start mixing the two together.
All the products from their site is 100% human grade.
I hope this helps, I just wanted to add my 2 cents worth.

I can not get the site to open, but I have a suspecious whom you are talking about. There isnt any such thing as " 100 percent humane grade.." Its either human grade or its not.. If you are in that area, there are a few foods that you could buy that are human grade, but man- are they expensive.. over 2 dollars a pound, and any raw diet you can make is like jeez- uh 1/3 the price. There is a good one up there we used to supplement Zubin. Here is the link.. http://www.megapetfood.com/catalog/item/2716900/2400577.htm
I am kind of confused about what pawnearsk9training is saying...are you saying I should switch foods so that the dogs bodies AREN'T cleaning out what's left behind by commercial dog food? Or are you suggesting some kind of supplement?
Oh, Borzoimom, what kind of vitam supplement would you suggest i add to my raw diet, and where is the best place to buy it?

Somehow this is gonna work.. if it doesn't.. lemme know how I can get her to switch?
Give it up dude. This is not a good site to try and convince someone to go back to proccessed food after switching to raw. There are several here who feed it already, and many of the rest of us are considering.
Wow, so apparently our new friend can't read? I just went to the website, and all that's on there is processed food. This topic has nothing to do with wanting to switch diets, all I wanted to know was whether my dogs were having a bad reaction to their new, MUCH HEALTHIER diet, and since they are not, I am not switching back to processed food. Ever, if I can help it.

Well... first... by not promoting IAMS, which is one of the lesser quality commercial grades avaliable.
She used to feed commercial, but after all the recalls, found some good advice through other members and made the switch. I'm quite sure she's not going back.

LOL.... I wondered how that got in here.. I thought we were talking about raw diet too, then came back and saw a link to processed food. ( I got confused too.. lol.. ) How is your dog doing today?
They're doing better. Most of the mucous is gone, and I suspect the dog that had it was my rescue, since I have no idea what his diet consisted of before I got him.

Yea I had that before too. Especially if it was a food with alot of retained iron etc.. I am glad things are normal. Most dogs take off with it without a hint of a problem. I am glad things are running along.
Okay, first off, I'm not promoting IAMS, because really bad quality dog food and because I want to get rid of it but that's what the previous owner had in the dog food container, and I want a more better qauilty dog food for my dog.
Secondly, sorry if I mistyped the website, the correct url for the site is; www.petsage.com (without the , that I had in the url by accident). I wouldn't mind buying a human grade dog food because 1, it's the best dog food for the dog and 2, she only needs a cup full of it since she's a small size dog.
Finally, I'm not trying to convince anyone to go back to their orginial dog food that they had, I just trying to say that I rather pay more for quality super premium dog food than buying less for by-product dog food that contains bad ingredients.
I think you misunderstand what we were talking about in the first place. I just started feeding my dogs a raw diet, which consists of raw chicken, livers, carrots, one egg with the shell, and plain yogurt. I buy all these things at the supermarket, so they are definitely human grade, and it is much cheaper to use a food processor to make this food yourself than it is to buy the same thing off a website. Are we all on the same page now?
YEah, we are. I was just confused and misunderstood, that's all.
I think I found a raw-food dog food diet from petsage, it's called.. Steve's Real Food for Pets. It says it has raw meat-based foods with all human quality ingredients. Lemme know what you think of it.
