I just got a new puppy, about a week ago. She is a 3 month old Yorkiechon (Yorkie mixed with a Bichon Frise). She is the perfect dog. She is already potty trained, sleeps well on her own, and doesn't show any signs of destructive behavior. There is only one problem. She cannot walk on a leash. No matter how many times i try,she hates being outside, unless she is playing with my other dog, Zoey,a yorkshire terrier. As soon as i open the door she lays down and i have to a. drag her outside or b. Pick her up and place her in the grass. When she is outside, she bolts for the door, even if she has to choke her self to do so. it got to the point where her throat was sore from the tugging of her trying to go back inside. She usually goes potty outside, with occasional accidents in the house but recently, she refuses to go outside period. I noticed it is worse when the grass is wet, and living in the rainy state, thats hard to avoid. Please help if you have any suggestions, on how to fix this behavioral problem of hers. Thank You!

My 5 month old Min Pin Dixie does the same thing. She absolutely refuses to walk on a leash. Infact, she will literally LAY DOWN if you put one on her, and haven't the slightest idea as to why. Champ loves the leash, and walks. I thought maybe if I took her out with him on a walk she would she him walking and enjoying it (monkey see monkey do theory), but no. So my husband and I figured it out, we got a tie out stake and put it in the front yard. Again, Champ loves it, it means he gets to stay outside and watch the birds without getting in trouble for wandering off. Ofcourse we don't leave him out for more than an hour. We put Dixie on it....and well it was bad. She walked the chain out, and stood there. Almost like she was pulling on it.

Eventually she got it after a couple more tries, each time extending the length of time she was on it. "Hey, if I'm good on this thing and I get a treat for it." She does pretty well on the leash now. If only I can figure out how to keep them from getting tagled up in my legs and eachother when we go for walks, lol.

You should try letting her walk arround with the leash on, or play with the leash on, once she does that 4 a while, hold the leash and follow her arround. If she gets used to that, then try it outside, if it doesn't work go back in, and try again. I know a few dogs just like that. If after another month it doesn't work, try treats. If it still doesn't work, you might want to consult a professional.
