Why do all the new posters feel the need to flood the boards? It's highly annoying.

Also, why do they keep rating themselves?

It's not winning you any brownie points, it's making everything harder to read and find.

Also, if Mod_kelly reads this... anything that can be done? lock excessive posts, delete extra posts? anything like that? Can you edit the topics (like I know we can on another forum) so they're shorter maybe? I know it makes a lot of work for you, but maybe something simple.

LOL

How about making countless "polls" about the same thing, and "omg I have a whatever breed, you do too!!! let's make a million posts about it"!!!

It because this board is over run with children. Which isn't a bad thing, young people can contrbute and learn from things, and ask vaild questions. If they're willing to learn and not be defensive, the young and the grown can learn much from eachother.

However, many seem to just want to spam the boards in a very juvenile and annoying manner. Not to mention a few of the younger posters spelling and grammer leaves a lot to be desired.

I think the best solution is for people to flag posts that are innapropriate of repetative and make sure to give a through explanation as to why we're doing it so it gets removed.

I feel your pain.
On several forums I have belonged to , post and user ratings were one feature all the long timers hated and all the new members loved to abuse.

All too often new forum members do not take any time to read and watch the board before joining and diving in. They do not have any idea who is a long term respected member and whose advice is worth following or whose is better ignored.

In fact , a great many new members (especially younger ones) have little experience other than chat rooms and text messaging on phones and do not understand the whole forum setup (that it evolved out of the old newsgroups and bbs -Bulletin Board System which existed in the days of telnet and dialup modems where you would dial into a BBS or news server often directly without using an ISP) where keeping the number of new threads down, having a specific reason for a post which benefits the community as well as yourself , keeping related posts in a single thread and not needlessly duplicating posts were essential.
They do not see that a forum is in many ways like email , where everyone in the group is a recipient and most do not like getting spam. We enjoy checking in and seeing what new topics have come up ; but really hate the board being flooded with unrelated (off topic) spam posts.

So to summarize for those who are new to the forum experience.
A forum is a community of like minded individuals who share a concern.
It has rules and regulations which while enforced are generally acknowledged and followed by community members without need for enforcement.
While there is often a great leeway in what topics are allowed; there are forums for a great many different subjects and you should really try to find an appropriate board or forum for "off topic" conversations, those which do not relate to the subject of the board in question.

There's been some great suggestions made in this thread.

Due to the recent developments, including but not limited to the persistant use of these boards as a personal chat room; the opportunities for any actual discussions have been greatly reduced. There's just too much to wade through before finding anything useful...

Of course kids of all ages and their pet related questions and comments are always welcome since they will be the guardians of pets of the future. They do need a reminder though that the Pet Talk portion of AP isn't to be used for personal discussions.

Mod_kelly doesn't have the time to read each and every post. I'm sure she would be happy to have some assistance in finding the off topic posts and irrelevant threads. It will keep her busy for a few days, but hopefully some order can be restored before too long if we provide her with a little help. Smile

While I totally can relate to how you are feeling, and I myself am annoyed by all the redundant posts, I think, being a kid, I know why they ( they being the posters who post the same things over and over). BTW, these statements are just how I think they feel, so no hard feelings. I think the younger posters are excited by all the options on here (i.e polls, new disscussions, etc.) and they want to explore those options. Maybe they haven't seen anything like this forum before and don't really know how to act or behave. Also, I don't think they start conversations that have previously been covered on purpose, I assume that they just don't want to search through 39 pages of disscussions to find one that suits what they are trying to cover, and long term posters get irritated by old topics from months ago being posted on the main page. I'm not trying to make excuses for anyone, but I think that's why new members do what they do. Besides, we were all new at one point right? Just trying to make peace with everyone.

Another concern I have is that people with real doggie related problems will pop in here, see all the "kiddie" posts, and decide there is no real help avaialble here. They then leave to seek help elsewhere, or give up their search to the detrement of their dog.

Or, the other problem is they post, but their post gets lost in the mass of junk posts.,

I, too, don't dislike having kids on the board. It's important to educate them. However, this board has been a place where people can come to find great information. I think the kids who are here need to stop the constant "silly" posts. Perhaps Mod Kelly could put another "stickY" thread at the top about redundant posts?

Also, as far as continuing posts about, "OH, I LOVE THIS BREED?!?!?!" isn't that what the breed board forum is for, which I do not frequent because of such posts?

Im sooooo tired of people recommending a specific breed of dog for people just because they have one and think they are great. There is a certain amount of responsibility that you have to take when making posts on here with any type of advice whether it is breed choice , medical, food etc. So these new posters are really hurting other peoples credibility here with their ignorant comments.

Also Im tired of people being ultra sensitive to what people comment on. I made a comment on a new topic about how I dont give suggestions for dog names because I feel it is a very personal thing. People attacked me after that saying that I was being mean. It was ridiculous.

True. I also am very annoyed when I read over topics where someone said something reasonable about their opinions, and other jumped all over them because their opinions were different! It doesn't make any sense to me personally.

With the recent influx of new people who truly have nothing to offer I have been super close to leaving this bored and never coming back because I really do not need the extra stupidity in my life right now

Before you make any drastic descisions, Sabrie, think about it. No one else has told any new members that they're annoyed by this (directly, at least). So maybe if the guilty members read this topic, they'll realize what they're doing is annoying some of us, then they'll stop. I know I would stop something if a lot of long-term members thought I was being annoying! If I am annoying, please tell me because I don't want to be the cause for someone to leave forever! Frown

Not everyone is being annoying.

I for one am not afraid to tell people when their posts are innapropriate or if they're being annoying.

Sharing opinions is good. Defending something just because it's all you know, because that's what kind of dog you have etc. is silly.

People can share their love for their dogs. Just don't make 5 different disscussions, polls and rate yourself 5 everytime you do it.

I totally agree.

There is no need to make "favorite breed" polls, in fact, it's pointless and annoying. Why? Firstly, because over half the time, somebody's favorite breed ISN'T EVEN ON THE LIST. Honestly, it's a waste of time. Second, who here even bothers to take polls anymore?

There is no need to make posts demanding to know what everybody's favorite breed is. Why? Well if you'd take the time to join the discussion and get to know the people on here, you will learn very quickly who is involved and has been involved in what, it's no secret. Even better? Read past posts, they may be locked, but they're really great for getting information about people and/or dogs.

Also, please please PLEASE don't make outrageous claims. There are enough experienced people here who can tell immediatly that you are full of it, it's not worth the time or embarassment to try to fool people or make yourself look good. It's ok to not be an expert.

Regardless of age - we expect everyone to post with respect for all - even in spirited disagreements. Anyone unable to abide by this simple courtesy will put themselves at risk for moderation. You will still be able to post - but anything you write will have to be reviewed by a moderator before it's released to the board.

Please take the time to review the posts on the first page so as not to post a "duplicate" topic.

If there is a topic out there that is closed - and you would like to have us consider reopening - please contact me at kelly_moderator@yahoo.com

We are trying to sweep old posts out. If a post hasn't had any new activity in over a month - then the system will close that
post(s). Eventually, an automated deletion will be executed for old/closed posts.

Your cooperation in all aspects will help to maintain the integrity of this forum. It's an excellent resource for all of us. Please treat it accordingly.

Thank you Kelly--would you consider duplicating these reminders on the Horse Say board? You've definately had to moderate a few arguments there, too.

I have a terrible time with spelling and i was on the honor roll all through high school and college ( animal care by the way ) and normally I put all my posts through a spell check before i post them. something i would like to ask for is maybe a spell checker as an option on the board. if its easy to check the spelling more people would do it. if thats no posible there is a spell check at SpellCheck.net to use
