As most of you know, different states have different animals and plants that represent them. For instance, the California State Bird is the Valley Quail. The Nevada State flower is the sagebrush. I think states should also have dog breeds.

One example would be the Alaskan State Dog Breed This would be a no-brainer. Either the Husky or the Malamute would have to be the state's official dog.

I live in Nevada. Nevada is mainly high desert. Winters are cold and summers are hot. Precipitation is rare. Most of the natural landscape here is covered with scrub and sagebrush. I figured the best state dog for Nevada would have to be the Saluki.

Now, see if you could come up with official dog breeds for the other states.

I live in Michigan. With all of our lakes and forests, a sporting breed like the Labrador would probably be a good one. (Although I keep picturing the city of Detroit and Rottweilers, Dobermans and Pitbulls keep popping into my head!)

Now how does America do it? Like does each state have a state plant and bird or how does it work. In the Bahamas we have a national bird fish flower and tree i think. Flamingo, Blue Marlin, Yellow Elder and the Lignum Vitae.

But if every state had a state dog then they'd have to add a state cat etc. and bird and fish make sense because everywhere has birds cats and dogs aren't even native to america

This was a hypothetical question, so state cats and fish are not an issue Smile.

Yes, each state has it's own bird, tree, rock, mineral, even soil!!

she references stuff like:

Alabama Title 1, Chapter 2: State Symbols and Honors

But yes, if we can have all that (some of which are just rediculous) then we should have a state breed!

For alabama, I'd say a coon dog (lol)

Actually the blue tick coon hound is already the mascot for Tennessee, since it's the mascot for the UT at Knoxville. Wink

I live in Ohio. There are so many sheep farms and other farms here, that a border collie is popular around here. The border collie should be Ohio's state dog. Did you know that the Catahoula Leopard dog is Louisiana's state dog? Other states have state dogs too. Ohio doesn't though. I want to see how to go about doing that.

Texas...should be the.....uh...this one is hard......maybe the CHihuahua but when we do have cold winters the dogs are allways shaking! So...maybe the mixes and the collies or the corgis...although when it gets real hot.......not all dogs can stand it. It is a hard state to place. Smile

Um no it wouldnt! believe it or not, not that many ppl in ak have malamutes or huskies! i think the alaska state breed would have to be Labs because of all the hunting and fishing we do and all the water we have. That or some kind of spanial ( they are good hunting dogs and they LOVE snow)

Really? I live in Ohio too, and I bareley see any Border Collies. I would say that our state dog should be the Redbone Coonhound though, since I seem to know and see a lot of people who hunt with coon dogs (but that's just my opinion)
