Your beginning post did not state that you were going to go the legal route, but rather take the dog without the owner's knowledge.

You don't have a legal leg to stand on if you are planning on taking your neighbor to court yourself. YOU have not suffered any damages. What would you sue for??? A court would not automatically award the dog to you anyway.

If you thought that someone was abusing their child, you contact a child protection group... you don't take them to court yourself.
AGAIN... contact your local animal control. They will asses the situation and if they feel that the dog is not being properly cared for they will take care of it.

Look, I'm sorry everybody. My dad's got me all worked up. (We don't get along) I'm 16. But just b/c of what people say doesn't automatically make them a minor. I got upset b/c you're right, I will be breaking the law. But people are breaking the law in my neighborhood everyday. And everyday people call the cops and no cops come out!! Thanks to all of those who supported and tried to help.

I respect what you're trying to do and I think you have a good heart. That's why I don't want you to go about it the wrong way. It is heart breaking to see an animal not being cared for. PLEASE make an anonymous call to an animal welfare group (most cities or counties have an animal control). Usually they will just have to talk to the owner and give them a warning.

I will. Thanks for understanding that I wasn't trying to make enemies.

If they end up taking him away, do you think the animal control place would give Buddy to us?

Typically, if the dog were removed from the home and placed in a shelter the adoption would be on a first-come, first-served basis. Such a large dog probably wouldn't be adopted very quickly, though.
I had found a stray once that I turned over to the animal shelter. I asked if I could get first priority for adopting her if the owners didn't claim her. I was told that, "No. It is first-come, first-served." It doesn't seem fair, but that's the way it goes!

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. The dog would have to be in great danger to be removed from the home. Most likely the owner will get a warning.

Oh wow.

Just do the right thing. We understand you want what is best for the dog, but do it through the right avenues.

There are hundreds of thousands of abused and neglected animals in the US. I think you could make a big difference if you put your energy towards a wider cause instead of just your neighbors dog.

Try educating everyone you know on proper dog care and spread your enthusiasm for animals around.

First of all, you're doing the right thing. Second of all, if the owner tries to take him back, call the ASPCA and tell them that this dog is very underweight. They may send someone out to look at the dog and if they DO take the dog, tell them that you were thinking about adopting him!If the ASPCA thinks he is being abused, they will take him.
Hope this helps!

If you feel like your doing the right thing then okay... But the other lady has a good point ... you can't just TAKE someone's elses pet and move w/ him... I understand where your coming from TRUST ME! And i would do the EXACT same thing your doing! To avoid more arguements between you and anyone else... Why don't you just pay a visit to your Local Police Department and talk to someone ... Give them a "HYPATHETICAL SITUATION" and ask their advice on what you should do.. I mean for all you know this guy knows your taking his dog in at times and the dog has some sort of chip... Talk to a cop and find out LEAGALLY how you may take matters into your own hands w/o involving outside authority figures! You just should cover all grounds. If your gonna do it, do it right! Good luck to you and the dog! I hope everything works out for the best! Smile

No, I DON'T rock. That was rude of me to do. And I shouldn't have done it. And I honestly don't care if that guy drinks and is on probation or not, but even if I can't get the dog to be with us, if I call animal control, atleast he will get a loving forever home. And also, I cannot call animal control b/c he has gained some weight. I can't really tell if he's at an ideal weigh yet, b/c he's a mixed breed. But he looks a whole lot better. But if they don't take him to the vet soon (he cut his pad on something), then I will b/c his paw will become infected. Thanks though.

Unfortunately, I was too late, actually, too slow. Buddy died on the morning of June 8th. He supposedly killed two gots and was labeled as aggressive and a cop shot him.

Then to top it off, my landlord got rid of another dog that didn't really belong to anyone. But instead of taking it to a shelter, he took it and dropped it off somewhere else the exact same way he was dropped off here.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF BUDDY AND BLUE.

I have to agree, it is very good that you are helping this dog recover but its not right just to up and take someones dog. even if they probably wont miss it or care that its gone. if you love this dog then you should respect its owner enough to talk to them about taking the dog with you...and good for youi going to court by the way! you fight for that big doggie

Thats a good thing not telling him. I think you will be a better owner than he was!!! Big Grin
i agree thats wonderful but a little cruel
