I have a 14 year old German Shepherd. He is around 95 pounds now, but in his prime, about 125. I was wondering if anyone else out there had a similar sized German Shepherd and if so how old they lived. My vet says that mine is the oldest she has seen Smile

My german shephard was 14 years old when she died. She, like your's was heavier in her prime, but near the end, she lost quite a bit of weight. I think 14 years is a good run. BUT, if I knew then what I know now about a raw diet, I think she would have had a longer, healthier life. But that's another thread. The raw food diet is amazing, and I speak from experience seeing the results with my bully dogs. They are so healthy and muscular. My German Shephard developed this greasy feeling on her fur, but yet a dry flaky skin problem. Looking back and doing much research on my own, I'm pretty sure she died of a Thyroid condition that unfortunately my vet did not diagnose properly. Anyway, the pros of a raw diet help keep these conditions at bay for a long time, and offer a really great prognosis for life spans that we never imagined possible for our dogs.

We had a GSD that died when it was 13 and 11 months old. She was a great dog, very sweet, protective, loving. She would listen to you as if she understood exactly what you meant and how you felt.

Thanks to all who responded. I am yet to find someone who had a shepherd older than 14. I am having a really hard time lately with it Frown I guess I just can't dwell on the end. He's doing so good right now.

We had a GSD/ Canadian Timber wolf hybred that lived until he was 16. When he was younger he weighed something like 130-140 pounds. He was huge. I miss him Frown

I used to have a german shepherd collie mix. Her name was Buster, and she lived to about 15.5 years! She was older then me! She used to "babysit" me on the porch when I was younger. Her main problem in her old age was arthiritus, so everytime she wanted to get back in the house we had to give her back end a boost... She'd just stand at the steps waiting for us. She was smart too, I learned after her death that she went to visit my neighbor every morning! I had no idea! Apparently she would go into his garage, he'd pet her, adn she'd go back home. She was a great dog!

I had a German Shepard named Shawney and my grandma found her in a parking lot with a bashed in skull we think she was hit by a baseball bat so she suffered from siezures and was severly afraid of the thunder and other loud noises. We had her on medication so we didn't think she'd live out to a full life but she ended up living to be 16 a nice old age.
