So The 4th is coming up..... How do you guys feel about taking your dog to see fireworks?

I personally think that it is not right to take a dog to see them. It's just not an environment I would want my dog in. I also think that its way too unsafe, with all the people and the risk of fire and whatnot.

most dogs are terrified of fireworks. i took my dog to go potty in my backyard late at night on Jan. 1 and one of my neighbors set off fireworks and my dog ran out of my yard ( the gate was open... oops.) and almost got hit by a car. fireworks+dogs= disaster.

my dog hates fireworks. even when hes inside he run to his crate and hides when theyre going on outside. i think the loud noise of the fireworks, not to mention the crowd, can be overwhelming for dogs... happy 4th tho!

It makes me so sad when I see dogs trying to hide underneath chairs during fireworks, and the owners just say, oh he's just hiding. Well duh! They're terrified of them! Take it home!

Depending on what we're doing, the dogs may be with us. Casey loves fireworks. She'll sit out in the middle of the yard watching them. If she hears a boom, she searches the whole sky for it. Carley doesn't really mind them, but she doesn't watch them like Casey.
If we do have them with us, they will be far away from the actual lighting area. Any sparklers, and the dogs will be inside.

A lot of dogs are frightened of fireworks, so I'd have the dog(s) home unless you already know they're not. Even if they're not afraid of fireworks, it's likely to be a busy mob scene watching the fireworks, and that's not something you want to take your dog to, either.

The two dogs I raised myself could care less Big Grin The dog my stepfather raised however, hates them and gets nervous. I took Rosie out to see fireworks when she was 4 months old to desensitize her. We heard a few today and she didn't even flinch.

Katie and Maggie are both terrified of fireworks. On the Fourth I went to a ballgame with Dad and they popped firecrackers in our neighborhood well into the nighttime and our dogs had a hissy fit and wouldn't go outside to potty!

My poor dog was a nervous wreck on the fourth. I think we will have to medicate her next year. I hate to do it, but she hid behind the couch and shook and panted heavily all day. We would finally coax her out and get her a little relaxed and another fire work would go off. I've never seen her so upset.

We're working on desensitizing Mya, my husband's Brittany, to loud bangs and thunderstorms. She did Ok this year ON the 4th, before the 4th was another matter! When we can prepare her, and are ready for them, and she can see where the booms are coming from she's ok... but we had neighbors in our area who just launched two or three mortar fireworks willy-nilly and she'd absolutely go bonkers! Our border collie couldn't care less, but if Mya gets excited, Ash is on her tail wanting to know what's up! So... that was our days up to the 4th... On the 4th itself Mya was with us the whole day. We watched the fireworks from our yard, a good distance from the launch point and she did just fine.
