Several things,

#1 how much choclate did the dog eat?
#2 how big/old is the the dog?
#3 is the dog showing any signs of illness? (vomitting may actually help the dog)

If it was like a couple of hershey kisses, you have nothing to worry about.

If it was like a huge chocolate bar you might want to worry.

Unless it is a small dog that ate a large amount of dark chocolate, you really shouldn't need to worry.

A average sized dog would need to eat pounds of milk chocolate to have serious issues.

he's a 3 year old beagle/foxhound mix and was given a little square of a hershey's chocolate bar.

My then two month old puppy ate half of a giant hershey bar and didn't get sick. (we discovered the remains when we got home from work)

One tiny square is not going to hurt a dog of that size and age.

Though I have to ask why anyone gave it to him/her.

If it was a little square, he''ll be fine more than likely.
You need to find the number to an emergency vet in your area if there's ever a problem again. Just call them and they can tell you what to do.

One time the same thing happened to me - my dog got into the candy - I called my vet and he told me to mix 1/2 water 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and have the dog drink it - it will make them throw up - and it did - all the chocolate gone. Make sure you are out side when you do it - it works really quick.

I've done the same, but it really depends on the size of the dog, and how long ago the chocolate was consumed. It may not be the best idea to do that without the vet's recommendation.
